Key Largo is a board game by the game designers , Paul Randles , Mike Selinker and Bruno Faidutti that of the French publisher in 2005 Tilsit Éditions was brought to the French, Italian and German markets. The company "Hodin" was responsible for sales in Belgium, "Filosofia" in Canada and "Carletto" in Switzerland. In May 2008 there was an English-language new edition at "Titanic Games" ( Paizo Publishing ).

Game material

The accessories consist of: a five-part game board (the island), 130 wreck cards (20 of them shallow, 30 medium depth, 30 great depth), 24 action cards, 24 cards with possible acquaintances, a starting player card, 15 divers, 40 diving equipment, and a lifebuoy (Round indicator), 5 wooden playing figures (ships) and a set of play money dollars.

Game frame and plot

The action takes place in 1899 in the area of the island town of Key Largo in Florida . Several treasure divers look for gold and sunken treasures in the sea area rich in sunken wrecks . During the game, fellow players do dives, buy equipment, and look for wrecks.

At the beginning, every diver entrepreneur has 100 play money dollars. He can have up to three diver figures work for him, provided he can pay for them and their equipment. There is only 10 days to finish the race to be the richest treasure hunter as tropical cyclone season is expected. Using five action cards, which each player holds face down, each player chooses an action for the morning and one for the afternoon. The action cards either show one of the four harbors or the action “dive”.

The players choose their action at the same time, that is, these cards are always revealed at the same time. When diving, you can only go down as deep as the hoses you have acquired before per smoker. The friendship cards grant one-time discounts.

Sea monsters can attack while diving. Own divers figures who could not defend themselves armed with a trident are eliminated.

When the ten days are over, each player's cash balance is counted. Valuable treasure ship cards are added to this. Whoever has the most money in the end is the winner.

criticism

The reviewer at “wir-testen-spiele.de” thought “Key Largo” was a good family game . At the same time, she vehemently criticized the poor quality of the game material in the Tilsit edition and the lack of innovative components and interactivity.

The discussion at “Hall9000” also emphasized its suitability as a family game. It is best to play with four players, as three players created too little competition and five too much scrum on the game board. The high luck factor, the easily overturning ship blocks and the exaggerated effect of the built-in “pickpocket” were criticized.

Others

According to Faidutti, the title “Key Largo” was chosen because the name is known and positively taken both by the American and French-speaking audiences due to the classic film of the same name.

The game is based on a second evaluation of an idea by Paul Randles, who died in 2003, which first appeared in German as “ Piratenbucht ”, later in English as “The Pirate's Cove” and in French as “La Crique des Pirates”. This time, however, pirates shouldn't be an issue, but treasure deep-sea diving should be the focus.

The illustration of the game box is a parody of the 1944 comic book The Treasure of Rackham the Red from the Tintin series .

The hurricane that created time pressure in the game was named "Katty" in honor of Katty Pepermans, the widow of Paul Randles, one of the creators of this game.

The faces of the playing cards contain caricatures of the three authors, the illustrator and the production manager of the “Tilsit Collection”, Nicolas Anton.
