The Kiessee Wegeleben is a standing, artificially created body of water in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

The Kiessee lies in the municipality of Wegeleben ( Verbandsgemeinde Vorharz ) in the north-eastern Harz foreland . East of the gravel lake performs the connecting road K 1319 by way life after Vorwerk Emersleben and the junction with the located there bundesstraße 81 of Halberstadt to Magdeburg over.

Another gravel lake is located northwest of the Kiessee. The Neue Graben, which was used for irrigation purposes and branches off from the Bode southwest of Gröningen, flows between the two stagnant bodies of water .

History and use of the Kiessee

It is a remnant lake of the former gravel construction, which is used as fishing and diving water. It is an artificially created lake ( quarry pond ), which goes back to the extraction of gravel and sand as building materials.

The former gravel works at Emerslebener Weg 1 now serves as the headquarters of Nordharz-Asphalt-Mischwerke GmbH & Co KG.

The landscape around the Kiessee serves for rest and relaxation. The grounds of the Kiessee Wegeleben, on the other hand, are fenced and may not be entered or driven on without permission.

On September 1, 2007, a large mill wheel was sunk in the lake not far from the former pump station, which today serves as an attraction for scuba divers.

The lake is leased by the Halberstadt diving club. V. The Harz diving club is a sub-tenant. There are three entrances for scuba divers : beach , pump and three birch trees . For a fee and a deposit, guest divers can get a key to the entrance gate at the Aral gas station in Halberstadt (entrance on the left).

As a typical quarry pond , the Kiessee differs limnologically from a natural lake in that it has neither superficial inflows nor outflows. Rather, its water body corresponds to the groundwater . At the beginning there was a particularly strong groundwater flow. But within a few years the slopes of the lake basin were largely sealed off by biogenic deposits. From then on, the water body of the Kiessee had a limnological life of its own. Since then, the exchange with the surrounding groundwater has been limited to compensating for level fluctuations.

Due to this peculiarity, the gravel lake temporarily acted as a nutrient trap. More or less rapid eutrophication was part of the natural life of this lake. This led to ever denser algae growth (including algal blooms ) and increased biomass in the subsequent stages of the food chain . Thus the consumption of oxygen in the deeper layer ( hypolimnion ) increased more and more. At times there were reduced ratios under which all of the phosphorus remains in productive circulation.

Today the Kiessee is known for its abundance of fish (see fauna). The gravel lake Wegeleben is designated as fishing water No. 7 (gravel plant Wegeleben). Fishing in the Kiessee is only permitted with the approval of the Weha "Untere Bode" e. V. allowed.

The Tauchsportclub Halberstadt e. V. erected a memorial plaque underwater for deceased club members in April 2018.

flora

The banks of the Kiessee Wegeleben are almost entirely covered with reeds, in which numerous songbirds and water birds breed. Water lilies grow in some protected areas of the lake . There are some deciduous trees on the bank, including alder and birch .

fauna

Numerous native fish species are widespread in Kiessee Wegeleben, including schooling fish , which are known for their stay in stagnant or slow-flowing waters with a soft, muddy bottom. Here they settle on the predominantly flat, soft and plant-rich bank areas of the Kiessee. The proven schooling fish in the Wegelebener Kiessee mainly include rudd and perch .

Other fish species such as pike, carp and tench were released in the gravel lake. Grayling were also sighted .

Some pike were caught in the spring of 2017 with a length of over 1.20 meters.

Numerous crabs live on the lake bed .
