The Kiliansteich is a dam in the Harz Mountains . It is located near Straßberg in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt . The reservoir fed by the Büschengraben is the successor to the two lower ponds of the old Kiliansteiche reservoir cascade .
Originally created as a drinking water reserve, the dam is now used for flood protection as well as for raising low water levels, fishing and recreational activities.
Geographical location
The Kilian pond is within the Lower Harz in the Harz nature park . It extends 2.1 km southwest of the Harzgerode district of Straßberg . The inflow is the Büschengraben and the outflow is the Rödelbach , which first flows southeast and then northwards to the Selke .
History and description
Originally there were four Kilian ponds at the site of today's reservoir , one of which was mentioned in a document as early as 1610 and which were laid out one after the other for mining . One of them was broken in 1901 and one in 1944, and the remaining one was in poor condition. For this reason, a new, higher dam was built from 1989 to 1995 at the site of the lowest dam. The two middle dams were removed and the uppermost dam of the Upper Kiliansteich , built in 1703, was expanded; his pool now serves as a pre-lock.
dam
The main barrier has a stone embankment as a barrier structure with a clay core seal, which is founded on slate solid rock. The dam is 24.6 m above the foundation level, 210 m long and 4 m wide at the crown. It has a structure volume of 93,000 m³. Its crown height is 442.23 m .
Reservoir
The reservoir of the main dam is 17.3 hectares in size. It has 1.069 million m³ total storage space with a catchment area of 3.9 km². The water level is at the storage destination at 440.5 m height. The design flood is 3.5 m³ / s and the flood relief performance is 12 m³ / s.
The Kilian ponds are included as no. 211 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin; the stamping point is on the earth dam of the Kiliansteich barrier.
