Killing Time is an American New York hardcore band from New York that was founded in 1988 under the name Raw Deal .

history

The band was formed in 1988 under the name Raw Deal after drummer Anthony Drago, guitarist Carl Pocaro and bassist Rich McLoughlin left the band Breakdown. For a short time the singer Anthony Comunale and the guitarist Mike Sentkewitz were added and completed the line-up. The first appearances followed, including in the CBGB , as well as a first demo that contained songs like Wall of Hate , The Lines Are Drawn and the Major Conflict Cover Outgroup . The band also played with bands like Agnostic Front , Warzone , Sick of It All , Gorilla Biscuits , Youth of Today , Sheer Terror and Murphy's Law . After an appearance at the Superbowl of Hardcore at the Ritz Theater in New York City, Howie Abrams of In-Effect Records noticed the band and signed them. Since there was already a British glam metal band with the same name, the group changed their name to Killing Time that same year. In 1989 In-Effect released their debut album Brightside . The album sold around 15,000 copies in the first four months after its release. Shortly after the album was released, McLoughlin left the band and was replaced by Alex Gopian. Afterwards the band went on tour, whereby the band was now only four because guitarist Sentkewitz had left the band to join Crawlpappy . In 1990 the band broke up. The reason for this was the increasing propensity for violence in the New York hardcore scene. Anthony Comunale: "We loved it tiring to play is beating bullies front of a pile, so we broke up." After the members long different occupations were followed one year, the band played in 1991 a concert on the West Coast of the United States . This resulted in the live sampler East Meets West , whereupon Killing Time, Sick of It All, Vision , Carry Nation and Point Blank could be heard and which was released via Nemesis Records . In 1992 the EP Happy Hour followed on Blackout! Records . Then bassist McLoughlin had meanwhile returned to the band; However, he took over the second position on the electric guitar, so that Gopian could continue to stay in the band. Since the EP contained songs that were atypical for hardcore music, for example with a saxophone accompaniment , it was not very successful. A longer version of the EP included the Raw Deal demo and a studio jamsession from Raw Deal. The following tours through the USA and Germany were also unsuccessful. Since singer Comunale could not get a vacation for the Germany tour, Dave Vision took over his position. Before that, bassist Gopian had also left the band and was replaced by Lars Weiss. The band split up in 1994; According to Comunale, this was mainly due to happy hour . In 1996 the band came together again, with Sean O'Brien as the new bass player in the band. In 1997 the next album The Method was released after the EP Unavoidable had already been released. The Method was recorded in the summer of 1996 at LoHo Studios in New York City. After a farewell concert in Newburgh in 1997 , the band broke up. In the period that followed, the members pursued various professions before the group reunited in spring 2005. In the early summer of 2006, Chris Skowronski joined the band as the new bass player. In autumn the band went on tour through Europe . In November 2007 the band went on tour through Asia , playing in Japan and South Korea . Due to the success of the tour, the members decided to rehearse and develop new songs. Thereupon appeared in 2010 the album Three Steps Back , whereupon the band from the drummer Anthony Drago, the singer Anthony Comunale, the guitarists Rich McLaughlin and Carl Porcaro and the bassist Chris Skowronski. The album was recorded in July 2008 at Electroluxe Studios in Brooklyn .

style

Jason Anderson of Allmusic wrote that classic hardcore punk can be heard on Brightside , with gang vocals in the songs being characteristic and the lyrics " apoplectic ". In addition, influences from bands like Metallica can be heard. Joachim Hiller from the Ox-Fanzine saw it similarly , heard influences from Hardcore Punk and Metal and drew comparisons to Best Wishes from Cro-Mags . On The Method, according to Hiller, the band play classic hardcore punk, without metal influences and drew a comparison to Sick of It All. The band combine classic with modern hardcore punk on the album. According to Jens Kirsch of the Ox fanzine, the band play three steps back old-school hardcore punk, with the group foregoing breakdowns . In addition, the band makes use of gang singing again.
