King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes , also known as King George for short , are a 1.5 mile (2,414 m) gallop race for 3 year old and older racehorses. Since 1951 it has been held every July in the British gallop metropolis Ascot . With a current endowment of 1 million pounds, the Group I race is the third most rewarded race in England after the Derby in Epsom and the Champion Stakes, which are also held in Ascot . After the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe held in October, it is the most important horse race in Europe and is therefore often referred to as the summer arc.
Until 2012, the 5th place of Erlenhofer's Orsini from 1959 was the best placement of a German horse in King George. In 2012 a German horse won this prestigious race for the first time with the mare Danedream . This was followed in the following year by the second German success with the Monsun son Novellist , who won the race with a 5 length lead and undercut Harbinger's track record from 2010 by more than 2 seconds. In 2006, the Hurricane Run, which was bred from a Surumu daughter by the Ammerland Stud, won the King George for the first time in Germany. The stallion was sold to Coolmore co-owner Michael Tabor a year earlier.
