The Roman Catholic parish church Maria, Königin des Friedens is a place of worship in the Berlin district of Biesdorf in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district . The building, designed in a modern design language, is located on the west side of Oberfeldstrasse in the Biesdorf-Nord area. The Catholic Church Herz Jesu Biesdorf-Süd was affiliated to the same parish in the late 1990s. It belongs to the dean's office in Berlin-Lichtenberg .

history

Roman Catholic Church 1984; the environment is not yet finished.

The church was built from around 1981 with the help of a special construction program for church buildings in what was then the Lichtenberg district. Its construction took into account the enormous increase in population due to the new development areas in East Berlin . The responsibility for the construction lay with the state foreign trade company Limex and, on the church side, with the central office of the East Berlin German Caritas Association . Between 1982 and the end of 1983, the first of the four planned new church buildings was built for the Catholic community founded in 1957/58 at Oberfeldstrasse 58-60. Until then, the services had taken place in Erbes restaurant , in private apartments or in a makeshift chapel in a barrack. The new building ensemble integrated the existing parish and community center. The architects' collective Ralph Rudnick, Ursula Laute and Michael Limberg provided the construction plans, the construction work was in the hands of VEB Bau-Ost. Werner Nickel designed the interior.

Bishop Joachim Meisner consecrated the church on December 18, 1983 under the name "Maria, Queen of Peace" (after the patronage of the Mother of God Maria ).

architecture

It is a clinker reinforced concrete structure in the modern style . The floor plan shows an elongated octagon that is embedded in further angled walls and merges into a rectangle to the south, including the community area. The altar area in the north of the building is trapezoidal in shape and receives sufficient daylight from the inclines in the north-west and north-east through wall-high, untinted windows. The design of the apse is based on theater stages . On the east side is the bell carrier, which turns its longitudinally clad sound openings towards Oberfeldstrasse. There are three bells in it. Its non-rectangular quadrangular floor plan has dimensions of approximately 7 meters by 4.5 meters. The north and south gables tower over the tower roof. As a connecting element of the entire church building, a light-colored brick band runs around the upper wall ends. The community hall, designed in the same modern architectural style, adjoins the nave to the southwest . The rectory to the south is a simple, two and a half-story plastered house. A covered entrance connects it to the church.

Furnishing

Church interior with a view of the choir

The ambo , altar table and baptismal font are designed in similar modern forms as the entire building. You are on a two-tier dais in front of a large relief mural made of natural stone with a crucifix in front of it . The ceiling in the choir is sloping from the nave to the altar wall, which reinforces the impression of a theater stage.

In 1996 the Mariengemeinde received its first organ , built by the Mecklenburger Orgelbau / Wolfgang Nussbücker company from Plau am See.

Church life

The Catholic community of Biesdorf has almost 2000 members, many of whom are volunteers. There is the " Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Choir", an ecumenical church choir in Biesdorf, whose members either belong to the Catholic community or to the Protestant community of the old parish church in Mahlsdorf .

The Mariengemeinde actively supports the work of a Catholic youth group, it also maintains a women's group, which in turn works closely with other parishes in Berlin.

A Polish Catholic community living in Berlin also occasionally uses the Marienkirche in Biesdorf for its church services. A Kolping family from the Kolping Society of Berlin belongs to the community .
