The Parish Church Am Schöpfwerk is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi is consecrated. It is the youngest church in Vienna's 12th district of Meidling .

Building description

The church is located on the southern slope of the Wienerberg in the Altmannsdorf district of Meidling at Lichtensterngasse 4 on the edge of the large urban residential complex Am Schöpfwerk and was built in 1979-81 according to plans by the architect Viktor Hufnagl , who also designed the residential complex. In 1982 the parish Am Schöpfwerk was founded.

Due to the terrain, the church consists of two levels, the lower floor of which houses the parish community facilities and the parish office, while the actual church space is located on the upper floor. The building is made up of cubic elements that rise symmetrically in the form of a step pyramid . The load-bearing elements are plastered and consist of a reinforced concrete skeleton structure, while exposed brickwork is inserted in between. A seven-storey campanile without connection to the church rises from the low vestibule of the entrance area. This does not wear bells after this was rejected in a survey among neighbors.

A staircase leads from the rooms on the ground floor to the central vestibule , through which the church interior can be entered. This consists of a central space above a Greek cross with a corridor made of concrete supports. The cubic elements protruding into the room lead to a kind of lantern made of glass windows at the top of the step pyramid. The white interior, structured by green and gold ceramic tiles, is reminiscent of Art Nouveau. There are dark blue domes in the ceiling, which in combination with the lighting form a starry sky. The four upper domes represent the song of the sun . The room has 220 seats and 400 standing places.

The interior consists of a central ceramic altar raised on two levels. Behind it is a 19th century crucifix . Carry Hauser created the image of a Pietà , Michael Fuchs , the son of Ernst Fuchs , the image of St. Francis of Assisi. The way of the cross and holy water basin are made of ceramic and come from Franz Josef Altenburg , the decorative ornamentation comes from Traude Windbrechtinger .

The square Klarakapelle is located in the north-west of the church.
