The village church Groß Varchow

The church Groß Varchow in the district Groß Varchow of the municipality Möllenhagen in the district Mecklenburgische Seenplatte is an early Gothic rectangular brick building from the year 1326.

history

In 1170 Groß Varchow belonged to the Broda Monastery . The first church was built around 1276. In 1326, Bishop Johann von Schwerin placed the newly founded church in Lehsten as a filia to the church in Varchow. Further renovations in 1825 gave the church its current appearance. Further repairs were carried out in 1860. The uniform neo-Gothic interior also dates from this period.

After decades of decline, extensive renovation began in the new millennium. As early as 2004, the inner tower framework, standing behind a brick outer wall, and the tower spire were repaired. The steel bell cage from the 1970s, which disrupted the historical construction and also had a static load, was removed again and the much older wooden one was repaired.

In September 2007 the church tower was restored for over 130,000 euros. Further measures followed with the repair of the roof structure of the nave in 2007 and the choir roof, including the renewal of the roofing with plain tiles in 2009.

The tower was consecrated on January 11, 2008. A new tower ball was filled with the construction documents, small change and a flyer reporting on the collection campaign. On July 12, 2009, the bell was ceremoniously brought in a procession from Lehsten to the church in Groß Varchow. Then Mrs. Finkenstein rang the bell once and consecrated it.

Exterior view

The church is a rectangular brick building with an octagonal choir closure from 1326.

The mighty west tower with a high pyramidal hipped roof also dates from the Middle Ages . Its brick formats of 300 mm in length, 160 mm in width and 100 mm in height are of unusual size and, as monastery format stones, are more likely to be found in late Romanesque churches of the 13th century. With field stones in the basement, there are ogival brick panels and sound openings with a round finish on the upper floor. The nave has pillars and a frieze on the eaves. The two-part windows are closed in an ogival shape and have sharp-edged stepped walls. With the west portal and the north sacristy , they were greatly changed during the restoration in 1860. The reconstructed spire from 1741 was put on. The spire of the Gross Varchow church again carries a billy goat standing upright.

A flat wooden beam ceiling spans the interior. The uniform, simple neo-Gothic furnishings date from the time the church was rebuilt in 1860. The interior of the tower was given a vaulted false ceiling and served as a room for the baptisms.

Furnishing

Two bells:

  • The old bell is from 1568. The new bell was cast by the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe and consecrated on July 12, 2009. The bells were removed during the tower restoration. Two steel bells from 1959 were no longer attached and are now in the tower. Their ringing had affected the tower due to the increased vibrations resulting from the high mass. The bell from 1568 has been restored and reattached. It bears the bell saying: “Man does not live on bread alone.” On the back it says: “Ev. Church of Groß Varchow “; a Jerusalem cross is present as a sign .

  • The ceiling beams are painted with flowers.
