The Tołkiny Church is a rectangular building made of field stones and bricks, built on a hill like a defensive structure . It was built at the end of the 14th century. In the north, the sacristy was added around 1400 . The submitted west tower was completed around 1500. Its upper floors with the arched brick panels replaced the former wooden structure in the 19th century.

A flat wooden ceiling spans the interior. Remnants of old painting were preserved on the walls. The altar from 1604 and 1607 was restored by Michel Großmann in 1675 , as indicated by a label. Some of his wood carvings date from the pre-Reformation period - such as the representation of the Trinity . The pictures on the movable wings of the shrine in the Gothic form are by Valentinus Helendorf and Gregorius . The pulpit is a simple work from the 17th century - as are parts of the stalls. Two Last Supper angels are noteworthy, the date of which is supposed to be around 1750. In the porch of the church there is a granite font from the 15th century.

On one wall of the interior there is a memorial plaque for Heinrich Graf zu Dohna-Schlobitten (sometimes also: Graf zu Dohna-Tolksdorf ), who participated in the resistance against National Socialism and was executed on September 14, 1944. The plaque comes from his children and was inaugurated in July 1994 by Edmund Piszcz , Archbishop of Warmia, with great public sympathy .

The church bell consists of three bells.

The previously evangelical church was converted into a catholic church after 1945 and structurally adapted to the changed liturgical use. It now bears the name of the "Mother of God of the Gate of Dawn " and is a branch church of the Garbno parish (Lamgarben) .

Church / parish

There was already a church in Tolksdorf in the pre-Reformation period.

Evangelical

Church history

At the beginning of the 16th century, Lutheran teaching gained a foothold in Tolksdorf and the neighboring church in Schönfließ ( Kraskowo in Polish ). On June 11, 1528, both churches were assigned to the parish in Lamgarben (Garbno) . But already from 1603 Schönfließ and Tolksdorf had their own pastor. Both churches were then united under one parish in Schönfließ until 1945.

The total number of parish members was 1520 in 1925. 360 of them belonged to the parish of Tolksdorf. The patronage of the church was incumbent on the manor owner.

Until 1945, the Tolksdorf church belonged to the church district of Rastenburg ( Kętrzyn in Polish ) in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union under the joint parish of Schönfließ-Tolksdorf .

Flight and expulsion of the local population as a result of the war put an end to the life of the Protestant parish in the village, then called Tołkiny. Protestant church members living here today orientate themselves towards the Johanneskirche in Kętrzyn within the diocese of Masuria of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .

Parish of Tolksdorf

The parish of the parish of Schönfließ-Tolksdorf belonged to the parish of Tolksdorf until 1945:

Catholic

Before 1945 there were relatively few Catholic church members in Tolksdorf. On April 14, 1860, the village was incorporated by decree into the parish of Rößel ( Reszel in Polish ) in what was then the diocese of Warmia . After the formation of a parish in Korschen (Korsze) at the beginning of the 20th century, Tolksdorf came there.

After 1945, the number of Catholics in Tołkiny increased rapidly due to the resettlement of Polish citizens. The former Protestant church was taken over by them. Today it is a branch church of the Parish Garbno (Lamgarben) and belongs to the deanery Kętrzyn I (West) in the current Archdiocese of Warmia .
