The Catholic Church in the Katharinenstift in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in the Pankow district , a hall church that is located behind a group of houses on Greifswalder Straße, is a listed building .
history
The church was built as the house chapel of the Katharinen - Stift . It was consecrated to the patronage of the Sorrowful Mother Mary (Mater Dolorosa). The order of the Sisters of St. Catherine , which has existed for over 400 years, is dedicated to charitable tasks. On August 1, 1931, the church became the place of worship for the independent curate of St. Gertrud. With the departure of the sister community in 2001, the complex fell to the Archdiocese of Berlin. The resident parish of St. Gertrud retained the right of use until 2003, when they worked with the parish of Ss. Corpus Christi was merged. The chapel then had different users. In addition to the German congregation, the Portuguese-speaking mission has its headquarters in the complex and uses the church for its services. The Herz-Jesu-Kloster (Herz-Jesu-Priest) has also been located there since 2013. Since 1995, the Edith Stein Catholic School Center , a state-recognized training center for social professions run by the Archdiocese of Berlin, has been housed in the building complex next to the church .
Building description
A group of five houses built in 1863 in late Classicist forms has been preserved from the development on Greifswalder Strasse that began at the end of the 19th century and runs from Königstor to the border of the rural community of Neu-Weißensee. Originally there were stables on the farms. The five-storey building complex and the neo-Gothic church with a gable roof are located behind the aforementioned group of houses. Access is through house number 18. The masonry buildings are plastered and set off with clinker bricks. The church has a recessed rectangular choir . The interior of the nave is provided with a surrounding wooden gallery and covered by a wooden pointed barrel vault.
Three windows from the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt have been preserved from the original furnishings . The stained glass shows the feast in Bethany , Jesus Christ as the friend of the children and the Last Supper .
