Church building
The medieval church consists of a nave , a church tower in the west, a narrower, straight-end choir in the east and a sacristy on the north side of the choir. The building material is sandstone , with limestone in the portals. The nave, the tower and the choir were all built in the second half of the 13th century. The sacristy was added much later in 1814 and expanded in 1862. The facades of the church are plastered white with the exception of the wall corners and the surrounds where the stones have been left exposed. The nave, the lower choir and the sacristy with roof tiles as a gabled roofs covered. The upper part of the tower, above a pent roof in the north and south, is narrower and is crowned by a short point with sound openings. The current upper floor of the spire is from 1864. The entrances are on the north side of the tower, on the south side of the nave and on the south side of the choir. The portals have pointed arches. The nave portal has a sculptured capital band . The tower portal was reconstructed from 1989 to 1990. The east window of the choir is still original, the others got their present shape during the restoration in 1910. The choir, nave and tower are covered from the inside by a tent vault. The nave vault is one of the largest in Gotland. The triumphal arch and the tower arch are pointed at the top. During the restoration under the guidance of the architect Jan Utas from 1989 to 1990, lime paintings were brought out again. The ornamental paintings of the choir and the square painting of the triumphal arch date from the second half of the 13th century. The passion pictures in the nave, two scenes of which can be seen, belong to the work of the passion master from the 15th century. There are also remains of post-Reformation painted decorations . Also of interest are the medieval plaster scratches and a well-preserved holy water niche on the inside of the nave portal.
