Location of Kirchmohr in Rhineland-Palatinate

Kirchmohr is a district of the community of Niedermohr in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

geography

Kirchmohr is located on a church hill at the eastern end of the Niedermohr district. It houses a Catholic parish church with a cemetery ring wall. There was also a nurses' house and an old people's home, which now houses a restaurant and a hotel. This is followed by several residential buildings with a rectory, a former rectory and the Catholic library. Kirchmohr is located near the Moorbachtal, which is part of the West Palatinate Moorniederung, a depression about 30 km in length. This was only systematically drained from 1745 in order to gain arable land.

history

A church in Kirchmohr has been handed down since 1219, which is located in the middle of the three "Mohr" settlements (Niedermohr, Kirchmohr and Obermohr ). All three settlements emerged from the “ Moraha ” farm estate in today's Obermohr , which was first mentioned in 987. Hof Kirchmohr, once also known as Marienberg, had belonged to the Einsiedel (now Einsiedlerhof ) coming from the Teutonic Order since the 14th century , which also built an infirmary. The church or chapel in Kirchmohr was consecrated to St. George in the 14th century , who was also the patron saint of the Teutonic Order.

From 1670 the church in Kirchmohr was used as a simultaneous church by Protestants and Catholics alternately . The Catholic parish of Kirchmohr was not established until 1750, with Niedermohr as a subsidiary . In 1922 the lower-lying St. Paulus Abbey was consecrated. After its closure at the end of the 1970s, it also housed refugees from Bosnia . In 1989/90 it was used for resettlers from the former GDR. In 1959 a branch church was built in Reuschbach.

School / education

A teacher was already working in Niedermohr- Schrollbach around 1600 . The parish and school building fell to the Catholics in 1707. In 1759 a new school building was built and in 1787 there were two schools in the vicinity. In 1956, both elementary schools were located in Kirchmohr. The Protestant school in Niedermohr was rebuilt in 1957.

Architectural and art monuments

The Catholic parish church in Kirchmohr emerged from a pilgrimage chapel from the 13th century. Building elements from that time can still be found in today's church. The oldest part, the substructure of the tower, was probably built around 1200. In the period that followed, the church was expanded and rebuilt several times. In 1379 the German lords built a new nave in place of the old chapel , from which the Church of St. George emerged. Large parts of the nave and the choir of this original church still exist. During the Thirty Years War the church was left to decay. The first repair work was carried out in 1648. As early as the 18th century, the church had become too small and dilapidated and should be expanded or even relocated. From 1761 to 1783 the church was renovated and expanded under the electoral leadership. The legend of the immovability of the small church also dates from this time. So it happened that the nave was extended to the west and raised by two meters. Today the church consists of a two-aisled nave, a Gothic choir and a four-storey tower from the Romanesque period , which, however, has been rebuilt and extended several times. Further renovations were carried out in 1911/12, 1972, 1985 and 2010. As was customary in the Middle Ages, the church is oriented to the east and has 165 permanent seats in the nave and 36 seats on the gallery.

Pilgrimage Church of Maria-Hilf

The church in Kirchmohr is also called "Maria-Hilf". An older image of the Virgin is said to have worked miraculously here. However, it was either removed by the Reformed or lost during the Thirty Years' War. At that time, processions from the area of St. Wendel are said to have made pilgrimages here. Because of this, the celebration of the “Maria-Hilf-Fest” began in 1891, which since then has been celebrated every year before or after the memorial day “Maria, Hilf der Christisten” (May 24th). In addition, the veneration of Mary is also shown in the legend about the church itself.

legend

A long time ago the church was supposed to be demolished. The miraculous image was brought to Niedermohr in order to protect it from damage when it was demolished. But when the morning bell was to be rung the next morning, the bell rangers found the image of Mary at the entrance to the church. The miraculous image was again brought to Niedermohr and again it found its way back to Kirchmohr in front of the church. Even after the third attempt, the image of Mary was again in front of the church. The residents assume that the image of Mary should remain in place and left it in its old place. It was later decided to move the church to the other side of the Mohrbach . Carters and workers brought stones for the construction, but they were found at the old church the next morning. Several times the stones were brought back to the new church square, but every day the stones were stacked up again by the old church. Finally, the Kirchmohrers built their new church on the old site.
