Parish schools in the Solmser Land

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The elementary schools emerged in the 19th century from the parish schools in Solmser Land , which were founded at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century in the former county of Solms-Greifenstein in Central Hesse . Initially, spelling and writing were taught in parish schools, and arithmetic was only introduced at the end of the 17th century.

history

Count Konrad zu Solms-Braunfels (1540–1592) is considered to be the founder of the parish schools in the Solmser Land (former counties of Solms-Braunfels and Solms-Greifenstein ). His father, Count Philipp zu Solms-Braunfels, converted to the Lutheran Church in 1554 . The contacts of Konrad zu Solms-Braunfels to the Reformed theologian Professor Petrus Martyr Vermigli in Strasbourg , to Professor Caspar Olevian in Heidelberg and to his relatives, Prince Wilhelm of Orange , as well as Count Johann the Elder of Nassau-Dillenburg led to the fact that he felt drawn to the Reformed faith during the lifetime of his father Philip . After his father's death in 1582, he introduced the Calvinist creed in his counties .

Heidelberg Catechism from 1563

Konrad zu Solms-Braunfels recognized the importance of schools both for education and for the Christian enlightenment of the subjects . Little by little he had schools set up in the larger parishes (parishes). Since there were no actual teachers, theology candidates, pastors or bell ringer gave the lessons. The school regulations published by Professor Wilhelm Zepper in Herborn also served as the basis for the parish schools in the Solmser Land.

To train future pastors and teachers, he sent four Solmer to the college ( Collegium Casimerianum ) and paid 80 guilders a year for their teaching and maintenance. In addition, in 1584 he donated 500 guilders and grants for four students from the Solms region to found the High School Herborn ( Academia Nassauensis ).

The parish schools in Dillheim , Ulm , Biskirchen , Oberbiel and Werdorf are well known . Lessons were mainly held in the winter months. The Heidelberg Catechism and the ABC book published in 1590 by Christoph Corvin in Herborn served as spelling and reading books . The salary of teachers was carried out mainly by kind. In 1582 the new church ordinance came into force and in this context the pastors were given some of the school supervision. The superintendent and responsible for the entire school operation was the church inspector ( superintendent ), who also had to include the schools in the annual church visits. Only towards the end of the 17th century was the curriculum expanded accordingly with the introduction of simple arithmetic lessons .

From the parish schools later emerged the elementary schools , which were formed in all other villages in the Solmser Land.
