Kiriak Sawriewi

Kiriak Samsonis dse Sawriewi ( Georgian კირიაკ სამსონის ძე ზავრიევი ; * January 16 jul. / January 28,  1891 greg. In Tbilisi ; † December 14, 1978 ibid) was a Georgian civil engineer and university professor .

Life

Sawriewi, son of a noble family of Armenian origin, studied civil engineering at the St. Petersburg Institute for Railway Transport . Even during his studies he worked scientifically and developed a method for stress calculation in buildings. On the recommendation of the institute director Stepan Tymoshenko , Sawriewi submitted his work to the institute council, whereupon it was published. As a student he worked on the construction of the lock bascule bridge and made designs. In 1914 he graduated with a gold medal and now worked there as a lecturer .

After the outbreak of the First World War , Sawriewi planned river bridges at the front and worked on the rehabilitation of old bridges.

After the October Revolution , in 1919, Sawriewi became the head of the road service in Armenia . In 1921 he became head of the bridges department of the Transcaucasian Railway . At the same time he became a lecturer at the Polytechnic Institute in Tbilisi (until 1956). In 1923 he was appointed professor. In 1926 he suggested the use of anchors in house construction to protect against earthquakes . In 1926 he developed a dynamic theory of earthquake safety. In 1928 he became the Deputy Director of the Transcaucasian Institute of Construction . In 1930 he became head of the chair and vice-rector for scientific work at the Institute for Rail Transport in Tbilisi . He recommended the use of lightweight concrete and prestressed concrete . He designed many large bridges for the Transcaucasian Railway. 1935 he designed together with the architect N. P. Sewerowe the Tscheljuskinzy bridge (now Queen Tamar Bridge ) over the Kura in Tbilisi. Sawriewi had many students, including WW Mikhailov .

After the German-Soviet War , Sawriewi founded the Institute for Structural Analysis and Earthquake Safety of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in 1947 , of which he was director until his death and which now bears his name.

Sawriewi was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR . He received the Order of Lenin twice , four other orders and various medals.

In 1959, the Tbilisi Railway Transport Institute was merged with the Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute.
