Kirill Georgijewitsch Denissow ( Russian Кирилл Георгиевич Денисов ; born January 25, 1988 in Trjochgorny ) is a Russian judoka who competed in the middleweight division until 2016, in the weight class up to 90 kilograms. He was European champion in 2013 and 2015.

Career

The 1.82 m tall Denisov was the 2008 Russian U23 champion. He won his first international adult medal at the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam. In the quarter-finals he defeated Dominique Hischier from Switzerland and in the semi-finals the Uzbek Dilshod Choriyev . In the final, Denissow was defeated by South Korean Lee Kyu-won . The following year the World Championships took place in Tokyo. Denisov lost in the quarterfinals to Elxan Məmmədov from Azerbaijan. With victories over the Brazilian Tiago Camilo and the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani, Denisov won a bronze medal. Denissow and Liparteliani also faced each other in the semifinals of the European Championships 2011 in Istanbul and again Denisov won. In the final, the Greek Ilias Iliadis won against Denissow. Four months later, Denissow was also defeated in the semifinals of the 2011 World Championships in Paris against Iliadis. He lost the fight for a bronze medal against the Cuban Asley González . At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , Denisov defeated the British Winston Gordon in the second round and the Greek Ilias Iliadis in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals he lost to Asley González and then he lost the fight for a bronze medal against the Japanese Masashi Nishiyama .

At the European Championships 2013 in Budapest Denissow defeated the German Marc Odenthal in the semifinals , in the final he won against Warlam Liparteliani. Four months later at the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, he lost to the Georgian in the semi-finals, but won a bronze medal against the Hungarian Krisztián Tóth . In 2014 the World Championships took place in Chelyabinsk. In front of his home crowd, he lost in the quarterfinals against the Uzbek Sherali Juraev . After he had won in the hope round against the Dutchman Guillaume Elmont , he lost the battle for bronze against the second Russian Kirill Woprosow . In 2015 he took part in the European Championships held as part of the European Games in Baku . In the quarterfinals he defeated Ilias Iliadis, in the semifinals Krisztián Tóth and in the final Warlam Liparteliani. At the 2015 World Championships in Astana he defeated Toth in the quarter-finals, in the semifinals he defeated the Georgian Beka Ghwiniaschwili . After his final defeat against South Korean Gwak Dong-han , he received a world championship silver medal for the second time since 2009. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he was defeated in his first fight Mammadali Mehdiyev from Azerbaijan.

After the Summer Olympics, Denisow switched to light heavyweight, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In this weight class, he won the Grand Slam tournaments in Qingdao and Tokyo at the end of 2016. At the European Championships 2017 in Warsaw he lost to the Azerbaijani Elmar Gasimov in the quarter-finals , but won a bronze medal with victories over the Israeli Peter Paltchik and the Dutchman Michael Korrel . At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, he lost to Warlam Liparteliani in the quarter-finals. In the battle for a bronze medal, like four months earlier, he beat the Dutchman Korrel.
