Kjartan Fløgstad (* 7. June 1944 in Sauda , Ryfylke , Rogaland ) is a Norwegian writer , in 1978 for his novel Dalen Portland the Nordic Council's Literature Prize was awarded and a well-known representative of magic realism in Norwegian literature is.

Kjartan Fløgstad grew up in the Rogaland district and lived in Sør-Varanger . As a conscript he was an infantryman in the Varanger Battalion . Fløgstad studied literature and linguistics at the University of Bergen and then worked for some time as a worker in industry and as a seaman . In 1968 he made his debut as a poet with the volume of poetry Valfart .

He published his first novel Den hemmelege jubel in 1970 and then in 1972 an autobiographical collection of short stories under the title Fangliner , with which he encouraged seamen and shift workers in heavy industry to express themselves in their own language and, on the other hand, also revealed his own Marxist attitude. He also wrote two detective novels in the 1970s under the pseudonyms K. Villum and K. Villun with the titles Døden ikke heller (1975) and Ein for alle (1976). In 1975 he received the Aschehoug Literature Prize .

Fløgstad's breakthrough came in 1977 with the novel Dalen Portland , which was awarded the Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1978. Then appeared with Fyr og flamme (1980), for which he received the critics' prizes in 1980 , and Det 7. klima (1986) two other well-known novels. In 1997 he was also awarded the Dobloug Prize. In addition to the novels, he also wrote a biography about the writer Claes Gill . For Grand Manila (2006) he was awarded the P2 Listener Novel Prize.

In his main works he demonstrated a realistic precision associated with an understanding of sociology . His books show the economic and social changes in Norway from an agricultural culture to an industrial culture to a post-industrial society . His writing style is always characteristic with lots of puns , allusions to other texts or films and a mixture of sociolects .

The historical novel Grense Jakobselv was last published in 2009 .
