The kkStB 76 was a freight train - steam locomotive series of the Austrian k.k. State railways kkStB, whose locomotives were originally procured for the Arlbergbahn .

When suitable locomotives were needed for the recently completed Arlbergbahn, the idea of a competition such as that for the first Semmering locomotives in 1851 was taken up again. There was an invitation to tender in which the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik , the Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf and Krauss in Munich participated. The Krauss locomotives were classified as the kkStB 78 series, the Floridsdorf locomotives  formed the kkStB 79 series  . The Neustädter machines finally became kkStB 76.01-04 . These locomotives delivered in 1884 had external frames and internal controls and were the best of the three rival series. However, they exceeded the profile limits.

On the Arlberg, however, the 73 series finally  prevailed. The 76ers were used in the shunt in Wörgl , Feldkirch , Salzburg and in Bischofshofen .

After the First World War , the four locomotives of this series came to the BBÖ , which they retired by 1929.
