Klaus Artur Lehmann (born November 7, 1947 in Neviges , Rhineland ) is a German doctor and natural scientist.

Live and act

After attending primary school and the municipal boys' high school in Velbert , Lehmann graduated from high school in 1966 . In 1966 he began studying chemistry at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen , where he in 1972 with a thesis in the field of organic chemistry to Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate . After a brief activity in clinical chemistry, he began studying medicine at RWTH Aachen University in 1973, which he completed in 1978 with the state examination and license to practice medicine . As a scientific assistant in the anaesthesiology department at RWTH Aachen University, he worked on optimized dosage strategies for the strong pain reliever ( opiate ) fentanyl administered during anesthesia , with special attention to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics . This is where the results of his doctorate for Dr. med. (1979) and his habilitation (1984). After completing further training, he was recognized as a specialist in anesthesia in 1983 . In 1985 Lehmann accepted an appointment as professor for anesthesia and intensive care medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne , where he headed the clinical-experimental anesthesia department as senior physician until 1996 , focusing on acute and chronic pain therapy . From 1997 to 2002 Lehmann was President of the German Society for the Study of Pain (DGSS) and from 2007 to 2011 Dean of Studies of the Medical Faculty at the University of Cologne. At the end of the 2012/13 winter semester, Lehmann retired.

Scientifically, Lehmann dealt with various clinical aspects of opiate pharmacology (intraoperative wakefulness, respiratory risk, postoperative and chronic pain therapy). The fundamental investigations of so-called patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), which Lehmann introduced in German-speaking countries and which has meanwhile become a worldwide standard, originate from his working group . Building on such findings, he pioneered the development and clinical application of transdermal opioid systems (patches), which have since become an indispensable part of chronic pain treatment.

Lehmann set important impulses in the field of specialist training in anesthesia and the additional designation for pain therapy and palliative medicine . In 1987 he established the Repetitorium Anaesthesiologicum (preparation for the specialist examination) in cooperation with the German Academy for Anesthesiological Training (DAAF), and in 1998 the pain week in Mayrhofen ( Tyrol ) in cooperation with the DGSS . By 2013, more than 10,000 doctors took part in these annual training and further education measures. The clinic will continue these measures. In 1996 he headed the German Pain Congress in Cologne , and in 2002 the one in Aachen.
