In decision theory, the LEN model of the principal-agent relationship goes back to Spremann (independent and in 1987 at the same time as Bengt Holmstrom and Paul Milgrom). The decomposition of intergenerational contracts (1984), the implications of constant risk aversion (together with Günter Bamberg 1981), and early work on the application of dynamic optimization have also attracted attention.

The best known of his books are: 1. “Economy and finance” (6th edition 2013), 2. “Financial markets”, together with Pascal Gantenbein (2nd edition 2013), 3. “Entrepreneurial thinking between strategy and finance” , together with Burkhard Schwenker (2008).
