life and work

“Der Türmer”, one of the last works by Klaus Stümpel, was erected on July 26, 2014 on the pressure tower of the former river waterworks in Braunschweig's Bürgerpark .

Stümpel grew up with his grandparents in Braunschweig and went to school there from 1948 to 1957. Since he developed a keen interest in birds at an early age, his grandfather built a dovecote for him in the garden. About 20 years later, Stümpel ran a pigeon breeding himself . After finishing school, Stümpel wanted to do an apprenticeship with a taxidermist , but his grandfather prevented that. Stümpel therefore did an apprenticeship as a poster painter from 1957 to 1961 . In 1960 he applied to the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts in order to study painting there, but was rejected. After his application for conscientious objection was rejected in 1962, he went to Northern Europe between 1962 and 1965 and earned his living with a wide variety of jobs, including washing dishes or in a traveling circus . After his return he studied free painting at the HBK Braunschweig from 1969 to 1974. Most recently, he was a master student of Roland villagers . In 1971 Stümpel took part in the 19th annual exhibition in Stuttgart as a member of the German Association of Artists . Between 1975 and 1980 he was a lecturer at the HBK Braunschweig. From 1983 until his retirement in 2006, Stümpel taught as a professor for nude and nature at the HBK.

Awards and honors

In 1968 Stümpel received the Rudolf Wilke Prize from the city of Braunschweig and was supported by the German National Academic Foundation on the proposal of Joachim Büchner . In 1979, Stümpel, together with the Armenian artist Ohannes Tapyuli , was the first recipient of the Nordhorn City Art Prize . In 1981 the Bernhard Sprengel Prize for Fine Arts followed, as well as a grant from the Villa Massimo . In 2010 he received the art prize of the SPD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament .

In 1970 Klaus Stümpel married the art teacher Dorothee Althoff. Their son was born in the same year. He lived and worked in Räbke , about 30 km east of Braunschweig am Elm and in Acquapendente, Italy . Klaus Stümpel died at the age of 73 after a long illness.
