Kleber Saarenpää (born December 14, 1975 in Uppsala ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender , who played eleven games for the Swedish national team, made his career in Sweden and Denmark. After the end of his active career, he began a coaching career.

Career

Saarenpää started playing football at Stäppens IF . About Uppsala-Näs IK he came in 1991 to the youth department of the IK Sirius , for which he made his debut in the second-rate Division 1 a year later . After several years in the second division, he joined Djurgårdens IF to play in the Allsvenskan . After he had to relegate with the team from the first division at the end of the 1996 season , he moved to league rivals IFK Norrköping .

At his new club Saarenpää established himself as a regular player and played his way into the national team. On May 31, 2000, he made his debut on the occasion of a training camp in Spain in a 1-0 success through a goal by Marcus Allbäck against the Danish national team . So he drew attention outside of Sweden and moved to Aalborg BK in the Danish Superliga in early 2001 . There he established himself as a regular in the defense and was also able to establish himself in the national team. After suffering a fractured tibia in his sophomore year and a torn cruciate ligament after recovery , he tried to get back to the team, but cooperation with the club was ended.

Saarenpää turned down a strongly performance-related contract that the Solna club AIK offered him for the Allsvenskan, and returned to his former, lower-class playing club IK Sirius. In July, Hammarby IF invited him to a trial training session as he was seen as a possible candidate to succeed Patrik Gerrbrand, who had migrated to Leicester City . It took until the end of the transfer period at the end of August before he signed a contract that was valid until the end of the season with an option to extend. In the following years he remained prone to injury, so that he was only used irregularly.

In 2007 Saarenpää moved to the Danish club Vejle BK together with his compatriot Pablo Piñones-Arce . Since he injured himself again and thus hardly got to play, the club decided not to extend his contract, which was running out in the summer. Therefore, the defender returned to Hammarby IF in August. Again he was hardly used and after the end of the 2008 season he ended his active career and announced that he would begin training as a coach.

In March 2012 Saarenpää took over the coaching position at Syrianska FC in the Allsvenskan, as the previous coach Özcan Melkemichel did not have the required coaching license . From then on, he acted as team manager .
