The adhesive thistle ( Cirsium erisithales ), also Sticky thistle called, is a plant of the genus thistles ( Cirsium ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

The sticky thistle is a perennial (hemicryptophyte) herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights between 50 and 150 centimeters, more rarely over two meters. The sticky, downy stem is branched and usually has no leaves in the upper third . The leaves are usually pinnate to pinnate, the upper ones with an eyelet base encompassing the stem.

The nodding, cup-shaped inflorescences stand individually on the more or less long, leafless “twigs” . The flower heads are not covered by bracts. The bracts are entire and densely glandular-sticky. The tubular flowers are lemon yellow.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The sticky thistle is quite common in the Limestone Alps , but less common in the Central Alps . It mainly thrives in forests and on forest fringes on calcareous soils . She likes to come in the company eristhales Petasiteto-Cirsietum, but also in companies of Erico-Pinion or Mesobromion ago. In the Allgäu Alps , it rises in the Tyrolean part around Elbigenalp from 1180 m to 1580 meters.

Taxonomy

The first publication was under the name ( Basionym ) Carduus erisithales by Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin . The new combination to Cirsium erisithales (Jacq.) Scop. was published by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli .
