The Horka – Przewóz railway is a branch line in Saxony and Poland, which was originally built and operated by the Horka – Rothenburg – Priebus AG small railway . The line that was closed today led in Upper Lusatia from Horka via Rothenburg / Upper Lusatia to Przewóz ( Priebus ).

history

Until 1945

Share of 100 RM in Kleinbahn Horka-Rothenburg-Priebus AG on June 13, 1929

The Kleinbahn Horka – Rothenburg – Priebus AG was founded on January 24, 1907. The founders included the Prussian state , the province of Silesia , the district of Rothenburg (Ob. Laus.) As well as a few companies and private individuals. Three years after the community of Horka was renamed Wehrkirch, the company was renamed Kleinbahn Wehrkirch-Rothenburg-Priebus AG on July 7, 1939 .

The starting point of the standard-gauge railway line was the Horka junction, where the Berlin – Görlitz line of the Berlin-Görlitzer Railway Company and the Kohlfurt – Falkenberg line of the Upper Lusatian Railway Company crossed. From December 15, 1907, the railway ran from the small train station there (Horka Nord) in a north-easterly direction to the then district town of Rothenburg, and from May 17, 1908 on - following the left bank of the Lusatian Neisse - to Lodenau . At Steinbach , the line crossed the river and after a total of 26 kilometers reached the end point Priebus, where there was a connection to the Lusatian Railway Company route in the direction of Sagan and Lichtenberg 450 meters away .

The company Lenz & Co. GmbH , which also took a stake in the company, led the company , so that the AG for Transportation in 1940 owned 56 percent of the share capital.

In 1945 the Neisse bridge was blown up so that no through traffic was possible.

German section since 1945

In 1949, the Kleinbahn was subordinated to the Deutsche Reichsbahn on the section southwest of the newly created border between the GDR and Poland on the Neisse . The always difficult situation of the railway did not improve afterwards, especially since the line through the Oder-Neisse border was cut. After the end of the war, the trains from Wehrkirch / Horka Nord initially ran to an end point at km 15.0, which was later named Steinbach.

Passenger traffic formally ended on May 27, 1967, but since June 1, 1958, the traffic was operated as a replacement rail service. Tariff problems meant that the Reichsbahn was only able to transfer bus traffic to VEB Kraftverkehr nine years after the last scheduled train had left. Freight traffic Lodenau – Steinbach was discontinued in 1968; The Lodenau – Steinbach section was not formally closed until April 22, 1993. The remainder of the Horka – Lodenau section is still operated as a connecting line. The line was later taken over by the Deutsche Regionaleisenbahn GmbH (DRE). In the period that followed, a planned museum railway was not established, but special trips took place at the Rothenburg summer festivals. From autumn 2008 the line was upgraded to a siding of the new pellet plant in the industrial area at Rothenburg airfield , as this was to be served by block trains. On the occasion of the opening of the connecting railway , the Saxon Minister of Economic Affairs, Thomas Jurk, visited the plant with a railcar from the East German Railway (ODEG) on November 5, 2008. Since the pellet plant filed for bankruptcy before production began in the summer of 2009 , goods traffic did not begin as intended.

In connection with the upgrading of the route, a resumption of passenger traffic was under discussion. This means that school traffic between Rothenburg, Horka and Niesky could take place by rail. After this idea was forgotten again after the presentation of a corresponding expert opinion in 2012, it will be topical again on December 22, 2015 after the DRE bought the Horka – Lodenau line.

Polish section since 1945

The section northeast of the Neisse was taken over by the Polish State Railways in 1945 . As a result, the section Sanice - Przewóz (Sänitz - Priebus) was reopened for passenger and freight traffic, the remaining section up to the Neisse bridge was dismantled. In the passenger traffic, a continuous line was formed with the line Przewóz– Jankowa Żagańska (Priebus – Hansdorf) of the former Lusatian Railway Company , with the trains partially tied through to Żagań (Sagan). Passenger traffic on the Sanice – Przewóz section was discontinued in 1984.

vehicles

When operations began, there were two three-axle steam locomotives from Borsig , and a two-axle locomotive from the same manufacturer was added in 1908.

Current state

Although the line from Horka to the airport as well as to Lodenau is officially in operation , there can be no train traffic due to the condition of the line (May 2013). The locomotive shed in Rothenburg has been renovated and is to serve as the club home of the Kleinbahnverein Rothenburg / OL eV . A restored four-axle passenger car, which serves as a clubhouse, a former auxiliary equipment car, a Kö II and a V 10 B , both in very poor condition, are parked on the side ramp of the station .
