The Osterburg – Pretzier railway was a branch line in Saxony-Anhalt that was originally built and operated by Kleinbahn-AG Osterburg – Deutsch Pretzier . It ran from Osterburg via Klein Rossau to Pretzier .

history

The Kleinbahn-AG Osterburg – Deutsch Pretzier was founded on January 25, 1913. From February 19, 1943 it was called "Eisenbahn-AG Osterburg-Pretzier". The founders were the Prussian state and the province of Saxony, each of which took over a third of the shares. The last third was accounted for by the then district town of Osterburg , other communities as well as the Goldbeck sugar factory and some private individuals.

The 39 km long, standard-gauge railway line was opened on July 15, 1914, shortly before the start of the First World War. It connected Osterburg, where the local management was also located, on the Wittenberge – Stendal main line with Deutsch Pretzier, as it was called at the time, on the Salzwedel – Stendal main line. It crossed the line of Kleinbahn AG Stendal – Arendsee, which had already been opened in 1908, in Klein Rossau . However, both sections of the route led into the station from the south, so that the trains had to "turn heads" here.

The operation was led by the railway department of the Provincial Association of Saxony in Merseburg until the railway was placed under state administration on March 1, 1946 and then handed over to the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH . From there it came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn on April 1, 1949, which also continued some trains to Salzwedel.

The war and interwar years did not bring the railway the hoped for income in the agricultural Altmark . In 1916, 82,601 people and 53,211 t of goods were transported, in 1939 there were 98,821 people and 53,211 t of goods.

On the western section between Kleinau West (previously: Dessau in the Altmark) and Pretzier, passenger traffic was stopped on August 29, 1968 and freight traffic on May 31, 1969. Passenger trains ran on the remaining part of the route until October 1, 1974, which were replaced by buses in the rail replacement service, until the official suspension followed on September 29, 1975. A year later - on September 26, 1976 - the rest of the freight traffic also ended. Only up to a dairy and a grain store in Osterburg-Schilddorf remained two kilometers of track as a siding, these were mostly dismantled in 2005.

vehicles

In 1914 there were three Henschel steam locomotives (C n2t) , as well as five passenger and 19 freight cars. In 1925 a four-axle benzene railcar was purchased from DWK , and in 1937 a two-axle diesel railcar from Lindner .
