The small-flowered sedge ( Carex parviflora ) is a species of the genus Seggen ( Carex ) within the sour grass family (Cyperaceae). It is common in Europe .
description
The small-flowered sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant . It grows in clumps or with short runners . The stiff, upright stems are smooth. The leaves are 2 to 4 mm wide and sometimes longer than the stem. The basal leaf sheaths are dark brown and not fibrous.
The flowering period extends from July to August. The small-flowered sedge is a sedge of the same age; the shape and color of all spikelets are similar. The sessile or only short-stalked spikelets are upside down, drawn together in twos to fours and are 5 to 8 mm, rarely 10 millimeters long and ovate. The terminal spikelet is female at the tip, male at the base (partly to the tip). The lateral spikelets are all female. The bracts are black-brown and have a whitish edge. They are a little shorter than the fruit. The stylus has three scars .
The fruit is 3 to 4 mm long, without veins and somewhat compressed. It is brown-black, hairless, at most rough and suddenly narrows into the very short, two-toothed beak.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54.
Occurrence
The small-flowered sedge is a submeridional-alpine to boreal-alpine flora element . It is widespread in Europe from Spain to Central to Southern Europe and the Balkans. It grows in stony mats and scree in the Alps in the subalpine to alpine altitude range at altitudes of 2300 to 3000 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it only occurs above 1700 meters above sea level.
