The spurge ( Euphorbia exigua ) is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the spurge plants (Euphorbiaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
The small milkweed is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches a stature height of 5 to 20 cm. The sitting leaves are linear, pointed and blue-green with a width of 1 to 4 millimeters.
Generative characteristics
The bracts have a broad heart-shaped base, they are significantly longer than wide. The crown is light green. The capsule fruits are smooth and not winged. The seeds are irregularly warty-wrinkled.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, 24, 28 or 56.
Occurrence
Euphorbia exigua is widespread in Europe, in Macaronesia , in the Mediterranean with North Africa to Iran . It grows in fields, in gardens and in ruderal areas . It thrives best on fresh to moderately dry, base and nutrient-rich, even stony loam and clay soils . It is a character species of the Caucalidion association in Central Europe , but also occurs in associations of the Aperion or Fumario-Euphorbion associations. In southern Europe it occurs mainly in societies of the Thero-Brachypodietea class.
The small milkweed is an archaeophyte in Central Europe and a wild herb widespread in limestone areas, characterized by additional root shoots; currently Euphorbia exigua is in decline.
