Sankt Georg is a former monastery of the Augustinian Canons in Augsburg . It belonged to the diocese of Augsburg and is located in the north of Augsburg's old town , in the lower city in the Georgs- and Kreuzviertel . Several of the monastery buildings are under monument protection (file no. D-7-61-000-311), as is the former collegiate church of St. Georg (D-7-61-000-312), as well as an ensemble of former canons' houses on the eastern edge of the monastery district (D-7-61-000-398).

history

The later monastery was founded around 1070 by Bishop Embrico von Augsburg as a spiritual community at a chapel consecrated to St. George . In 1135, Bishop Walter I von Dillingen and the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter founded a monastery for Augustinian Canons here , whose newly built church was consecrated as early as 1142. The monastery gained the right to freely elect the provost in the middle of the 12th century. The Augustinian Canons took over the pastoral care of the growing suburb to the west of the cathedral district. In 1180 St. George got its own parish.

With the ban on the Catholic mass in Augsburg in 1537, the canons had to leave the city. They found an exile at Guggenberg Castle near Schwabmünchen. After the Schmalkaldic War in 1548 they returned to Augsburg. Another expulsion by Swedish troops took place in 1632/35. In 1640 the monastery burned down and in 1660 the provost's office. The convent buildings were rebuilt from 1702 to 1705 by Hans Georg Mozart .

The monastery was dissolved in 1802 in the course of secularization . The indebted convent at that time consisted of twelve canons. It was not until 1806 that the monastery buildings were completely cleared. St. Georg then served as a French military hospital and finally the Bavarian army as a military hospital and barracks. The church became the town parish church , and in 1901 the monastery buildings were also given to the parish.

With the air raids on Augsburg in the night of February 25th to 26th, 1944, the former monastery buildings and the church were badly damaged. The exterior of the former prelate building and the convent building were restored.

Real estate

The monastery, under the sovereignty of the Augsburg bishopric , did not succeed in establishing its own rule. The possessions in today's Augsburg district consisted only of free float.
