St. Clara Monastery Church - a small chapel

The St. Klara Monastery Church is a small church in Freising . It belongs to the monastery of the Poor School Sisters of Our Lady , the only remaining Christian monastery in Freising. The renovated “Klösterl” is currently used as an old people's home, which is inhabited by 30 sisters.

history

In 1846, parish priest Plank built the St. Klara monastery with a chapel on the acquired area of the Hofgarten and in 1850 called the poor school sisters from the Anger in Munich to look after children and young people. Originally there were Poor Clares - hence the name St. Clare! - intended, but the contemplative order was not approved by the city.

The nearby cemetery dates back to 1868, the former orphanage and grotto to 1883.

Gothic winged altar

The winged altar from around 1429/35 is the most important Gothic winged altar in Freising. More precisely it is in the Dehio: A major work of Salzburg painting of the soft style is the grand piano retable from Weildorf bei Laufen from 1429, acquired by Joachim Sighart in 1865.

The wings - scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary - were painted by a Salzburg school. The Madonna in the altar niche is a replica of a late Gothic Mother of God (1430), the so-called Weildorfer Madonna. The robe was a symbol of grace at that time: the richness of the folds of the robe allows Mary to be recognized as the gracious. She wears the heavenly crown and holds the divine child in her arms. The apple in the child's hand symbolizes Eve's guilt.

Altar wing with scenes from the life of Mary:

  • Inside: Annunciation to Mary, Adoration of the Magi, Birth of Jesus, Death of Mary
  • Outside: Visitation of Mary, presentation of the baby Jesus in the temple, circumcision, flight to Egypt.

On the inside as well as on the outside, two prophets are depicted with a banner.
