The Heiliggeistspital is a facility in Freising that provides care for the elderly . The company is run by the Heiliggeistspital Foundation .

From the foundation to the Thirty Years War

The hospital goes back to Conrad Gaymann († 1376). The canon in St. Andrä and canon in Freising determined in his will of 1374, presumably under the impression of the plague epidemic , that his entire estate should be used to build a home for poor, needy and sick people . According to archaeological finds, the first monastery building was a two-aisled hall building near the Moosach in the east of the old town and was probably completed as early as 1378. In 1380, Bishop Leopold von Sturmberg prepared the deed of foundation, which stipulated that the cathedral dean should lead the administration and the parish of St. Georg should be responsible for pastoral care. The hospital also had an east-facing single-nave chapel with a tower on the north side.

The monastery was financed by money or property left by clergy and laypeople. In 1416 the Munich patrician families Kopffenperger and Kolb donated a considerable sum for a daily mass. Today a re-exposed inscription from 1750 on the choir arch reminds of this donation. The church was rebuilt in 1489 and renovated again in 1607 under Bishop Ernst of Bavaria .

New building after the Thirty Years War

The hospital also suffered from the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). On April 18, 1642, Bishop Veit Adam von Gepeckh was even forced to call on the faithful to make donations and to grant a 40-day indulgence . The building had to be rebuilt after the war. The foundation stone of the building, which was probably designed by Antonio Riva , was laid on May 3, 1686. The construction of the building, completed in 1688, was financed with the help of the dean of the cathedral, Christian Graf von Königsfeld, who is therefore the second founder of the institution. The result was a three-story building with four wings surrounding an inner courtyard, with a new church in the west wing which was consecrated in 1697 by Bishop Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing and Liechteneck . (→ Heiliggeistkirche )

In 1702 the house rules from 1450 were renewed. In addition to the rules for living together and spiritual regulations, this also contained a decree for the residents of the house. This obliged the resident to leave 3/4 of the property he owned at the time of his death to the monastery. This regulation was later dropped and the residents were only encouraged not to forget the hospital .

After secularization

After secularization , the Heiliggeistspital was transferred to the Electorate of Bavaria , which assigned it to the city of Freising's poor fund. This fund also financed the city's orphanage, poor hospital and hospital, and so patients from the hospital were also transferred to the hospital. The resulting grievances (including the deterioration of the spiritual house rules) were decided to restore the hospital to its original status. In response to this royal resolution of August 2, 1853, the funds of the individual houses were separated again in 1855. Since then, the Heiliggeistspital-Stiftung Freising has supported the facility.

In addition to the original building in the old town of Freising with 88 seats, the two buildings of the “Senior Center Freising” ( ) with 198 seats also belong to the foundation today . The foundation also includes several residential complexes for assisted living ( ) as well as a mobile care service and a menu service . The hospital was completely renovated from 1988 to 1991.

Holy Spirit Church

Interior of the church with the altars

The single-nave church is located in the southern part of the west wing. The outer wall facing the street (Heiliggeistgasse) is divided by four pilasters and there is a gable above the main entrance . The ceiling of the interior is supported by pillars on which a barrel vault lies. A special feature were the windows facing north and east through which the frail residents could watch the services in the sickrooms.

The high altar retable dates from 1697. Above the altarpiece, a coat of arms commemorates the donor Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing and Liechteneck . The side altars date from around 1720. The church tower has a hood made of copper sheet. In the belfry there are two bells, from 1577 and 1685. The grave of Christian Graf von Königsfeld († 1713) is also in the church. The Holy Spirit Church was renovated in 2001-2004.
