Ascension Church - demolition of the old parish hall

The parish church of Ascension Day is the Evangelical Lutheran parish and deanery church of Freising in Upper Bavaria . In its present form, it was built in 1951/52 according to plans by the Günzburg architect Julius Ott . It replaced a previous building that was destroyed in an air raid on April 18, 1945. The consecration of the church took place on May 22, 1952. It has also been the deanery church since 1998, when the Freising deanery was newly created. The interior renovation in 2014 gave it a modern interior. The parish hall, which has been under construction since 2016, will add a modern parish center to the Ascension Church, which will also accommodate the deanery.

history

The first Protestants came to the city only with the secularization of 1803 and the dissolution of the Hochstift Freising . At the beginning of the 19th century, the Bavarian King Maximilian I targeted Protestant immigrants from the areas newly added to Bavaria in Swabia , Franconia and the Palatinate to cultivate the moss landscape north of Munich . The Protestant community experienced further growth through the stationing of a garrison in the Neustift district .

On October 21, 1849, the travel preacher Friedrich Emanuel Popp from Munich held the first Protestant service in the small town hall. With the help of donations, a neo-Gothic church was built in the southern suburb in 1864 . Its consecration took place on September 4, 1864.

This building was completely destroyed in a bombing raid on the area around the station on April 18, 1945. A memorial stone in front of today's building commemorates this day. After the end of the Second World War , the Catholic parish gave the parish the church church for its services .

Today's construction

The Ascension Church was not rebuilt until 1951/52. It was built as a simple hall church according to the circumstances. The unadorned interior is only adorned behind the altar by the panel painting Descent from the Cross by the Augsburg painter Jörg Breu from the 16th century. In 2004 a 26 meter high tower was added to the south-eastern side of the nave. Four bells hang in it, which are inscribed on an outside plaque.

Renovation 2013/14

The interior renovation, which strengthened the statics and a new solid stone church floor, resulted in a completely new interior of the church. The wooden gallery was painted white and the choir was completely redesigned by Werner Mally. The font was moved to the central axis of the nave. The altar, the lectern and the pulpit are made of oak. Instead of the panel painting, an installation called “Autopoiesis” adorns the choir.

New evangelical parish hall 2018

In 2013, the rectory and the parish hall next to the church were irreparably damaged by a flood. After the old buildings were demolished in autumn 2016, a new “Evangelical Community Hall of Christ Ascension” with rooms for congregations and offices (deanery and parish office) was built at the end of 2016. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building took place after Easter 2017. It was completed in autumn 2018 and inaugurated on December 8, 2018 by Regional Bishop Breit-Keßler .
