The Knechtsand is an oil and pollution control ship. The ship is owned by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , represented by the Senator for Environmental Protection and Urban Development . The ship is managed by Bugsier-, Reederei- und Bergungs-GmbH & Co. KG ( Bremerhaven branch ).

The ship was built at MWB Motorenwerke in Bremerhaven. The keel was laid on June 16, 1993, the launch on May 16, 1994. It was completed in September 1994.

The "Knechtsand" is built as a catamaran . It is powered by two twelve - cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from the manufacturer Deutz MWM Motoren-Werke Mannheim, each with an output of 430 kW. The two motors each act on a propeller . Two generators with an apparent power of 125 kVA each are  on board for the power supply .

To combat oil and pollutants, the ship has a 10 m wide skimmer , which is attached between the two hull parts . The skimmer can absorb up to 800 m³ of oils or chemicals per hour from the surface of the water and pump them into the on-board tanks. The tanks have a volume of 400 m³, of which 65 m³ are intended for chemicals and 335 m³ for oils.

The ship, which is approved for use in coastal waters, is used by the accident command in Cuxhaven . In the context of international agreements such as the Agreement on Cooperation in Combating Pollution of the North Sea by Oil and Other Pollutants (Bonn Agreement) or the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area ( HELCOM ), the ship can also be operated by other states can be requested.

The ship is named after sandbanks in front of the Weser and Elbe estuaries , which are called Knechtsand .
