Carl Friedrich Koepe was born as the second youngest child of the farmer Friedrich Koepe and his wife Friederike, née Telgenkämper, on their parents' farm in Bergkamen .

He began his professional life in coal mining as a miner and tugboat in the underground mine in Ibbenbüren in the Teutoburg Forest . After attending the Märkische Bergschule in Bochum , he worked as a foreman and mechanical engineer at various coal mines in Ibbenbüren and in the Ruhr area . From 1873 he was the technical director of various collieries in the Krupp mine.

In 1876/1877 Koepe succeeded in a groundbreaking invention that later revolutionized the entire shaft conveyor technology. He developed a traction sheave conveyor that was more technically sophisticated, economical and versatile than the drum conveyor that was used until then , and subsequently became the standard of conveyor technology in mining and other elevator systems .

Koepe himself only caused trouble with the company's management. This did not recognize the value of the invention and even let the patent assigned to it expire. "He did not live to see the later fame."

"Koepe-Förder" and " Koepe-Scheibe " are still established technical terms and components of the miner's language .
