history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1210, it was heavily depopulated during the Mongol invasions and rebuilt by German colonists.
On October 4, 2010, a serious industrial accident , the so-called Kolontár dam breach, occurred in the aluminum works of MAL AG (Magyar Aluminum) located in the city of Ajka . 600,000 to 700,000 cubic meters of corrosive, heavy metal-containing red mud leaked from the landfill basin about 1 km from Kolontár and flooded about 800 hectares of land, including most of Kolontár, some waist-high. Ten people were killed in the accident and 150 injured.
