Kolymite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of the elements, more precisely the metals and intermetallic compounds. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system with the chemical composition Cu 7 Hg 6 and forms cuboctahedral crystals of up to 5 μm in size or is fused with copper in aggregates .

Etymology and history

Kolymit was first discovered in 1981 by EA Markova, NM Chernitsova, Y u. S. Borodaev, LS Dubakina and OE Yushko-Zaldrarova in the type locality , the Krokhalin- antimony -Lagerstätte in the region of Magadan in Russia found. The mineral is named after the Kolyma river on which the type locality is located.

classification

In the Strunz system , kolymite is counted among the metals and intermetallic compounds, a subgroup of the elements. After the 8th edition , together with belendorffite , lead amalgam , eugenite , gold amalgam , luanheit , moschellandsbergite , paraschachnerite , potarite , mercury , schachnerite and weishanite, one group. In the 9th edition it forms a subgroup of the mercury amalgam family with Belendorffit.

In the Dana system , it forms with Belendorffit a subgroup (copper-amalgam alloys) of the metallic elements apart from the platinum metals .

Education and Locations

Kolymite was found in the heavy metal fraction of concentrates obtained from the mining of antimony ores. It is associated with copper , stibnite , berthierite , pyrite , arsenopyrite and quartz . In addition to the type locality, other finds are known from the vicinity of Copiapó in Chile , Rudabánya in Hungary and Virginia City in the US state of Nevada .

Crystal structure

Kolymite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system in the space group with the lattice parameter a = 9.42  Å , as well as four formula units per unit cell .
