The FDP has been growing steadily since 1994 and has reached 5th place.

The left edge of the political spectrum is divided into two parties and one electoral group. The party Die Linke , which stood in 2004 and 1999 as the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) , and the German Communist Party (DKP) on the one hand and the Essen electoral group is OPEN , which the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) as a local election platform for serves its members to another. Together, the three achieved a 4.7% share of the vote and four council seats in the 2004 council election. The parties Die Linke, DKP and MLPD are observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In addition, from 2004 to 2008 there was one member each of the Northern Citizens' List in the district council of districts V and VI. The party civil rights movement Solidarity (BüSo) is running in 2009 with its own candidate for mayor.

From the right edge of the political spectrum, the Republicans have been represented in the council since 2004 and the NPD since 2009 . In 2009 pro NRW competes with its own mayoral candidate in Essen.

The GRÜNEN candidate was again the parliamentary group leader Hiltrud Schmutzler-Jäger. Christian Stratmann entered the race for the FDP.
