Konrad Baumgarten (printer)

Konrad Baumgarten (also Baumgartner ; * around 1470 in Rottenburg am Neckar ; † after 1510 ) was an early book printer in Danzig , Olmütz and Frankfurt (Oder) .

Life

Baumgarten came from Rottenburg. At the end of the 15th century he was recorded as a printer in Gdansk. In 1499 he printed the Agenda sive Exsequiale sacramentorum for the canon Martinus in Wilna . Only a few sheets of two earlier prints have survived. A sheet of a prayer book shows his printer's stamp and is dated 1498. He used a missal type as font and Lombards and xylographic letters as initials .

He printed in Olomouc in 1500 and 1501. In 1503 he moved to Breslau , and in 1506 to Frankfurt an der Oder, where he also enrolled at the newly founded Brandenburg University .
