Konrad Best (* 15. April 1890 in Wendeburg ; † 24. December 1958 in Stadtoldendorf ) was a German writer , in addition to poetry , short stories and radio plays mainly novels wrote.

Life

Konrad Beste was born in Wendeburg in 1890. He studied in Munich, Berlin and Heidelberg. On November 26, 1914, he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. First Konrad Beste worked in Berlin, then in Wilsche, then in Hamburg-Wandsbek and from 1938 until his death in the "Sperberhaus" in Stadtoldendorf. In addition to poetry, short stories and radio plays, he mainly wrote novels. A literary competition prompted him to pick up his pen - in fact, he wrote all of his texts by hand. The work submitted with the title Prize Novel was awarded a prize. In Wilsche, Konrad Beste was related to the Heinrich Schacht family on his mother's side. As a child, he occasionally visited their farm (today: Dohrendorf). In 1927 he moved from Berlin to Wilsche and then lived here for a long time with his relatives. The local novel The Pagan Village , created in 1932 , in which Wilsche is reflected in "Kleindahle", is described by literary critics as the most important work by Konrad Beste. For this novel he received the Lessing Prize of the City of Hamburg. This work describes the rural conditions of a place, free from sentimentality and false idealization. General human characters are shown with their temptations, hopes and doubts. Many conversations with the Wilsch innkeeper Heinrich Meyer in his inn "Zum Deutschen Heinrich" had obviously impressed him deeply. After 1945 Konrad Beste was the first writer in Lower Saxony whose books were released for reprint. Some of his works have also been translated and published in other languages, including the book for young people in Japanese. He is buried in Wolfenbüttel.

Act

In winning novel Konrad Best had the name "Sperber house" used. Over ten years later, in 1938, a house with this name was built in his honor on Kellbergstrasse in Stadtoldendorf, where he lived until his death. His work also found recognition and confirmation on a higher level. The appointment to the advisory board for art and culture resulted in a well-maintained contact with many cultural workers. His writings are characterized by an often witty and ironic style and accurate polemics.
