Konstanty Gorbatowski (born September 19, 1914 in Kiev , † September 29, 1984 in Gdańsk ) was a Polish painter. His works were particularly popular in Italy, where he was referred to as a "romantic surrealist ".

Live and act

After Gorbatowski fled the Soviet Union with his mother in 1923 , they settled in the Polish city of Łódź . There Gorbatowski attended a technical college, where he was trained as a draftsman and then worked in this profession. In 1943 the Gestapo arrested him for taking part in conspiratorial activities. He was imprisoned in Groß-Rosen , Dora and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps . After internment ended, it took Gorbatowski a year to recover and finally came back to Poland in 1946, where he lived and worked in the coastal cities of Gdańsk , Gdynia and Sopot until the end of his life .

Gorbatowski studied painting from 1949 to 1954 at the Art Academy in Danzig under Krystyna Łada-Studnicka , Juliusz Studnicki and Kazimierz Śramkiewicz . In 1955 he received his diploma.

Initially, Gorbatowski mainly painted portraits of women and figure compositions. His works became increasingly geometrical and finally almost abstract. He often designed cities that looked like labyrinths in which geometrized human silhouettes appeared. He also dealt with panel and wall painting .

Gorbatowski has exhibited at around 30 solo exhibitions in galleries and institutions in Poland and abroad: Denmark ( Maribo , 1975; Lyngby , 1975), Germany ( Düsseldorf , 1977), France ( Bourges , 1968), Italy ( Milan , 1975; Turin , 1970; Rome , 1970), Morocco ( Casablanca , 1967, 1973 and 1974; Rabat , 1968 and 1975), Norway ( Copenhagen , 1975), Sweden ( Stockholm , 1975; Uppsala , 1967) and the USA ( Detroit , 1972; New York City , 1972 and 1973). In 1967 he received a Grand Prix in Tangier . After his death, the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw held a retrospective of his work.

The artist's works can be found in the National Museums in Warsaw and Gdansk , the Museum in Szczecin and the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma (MACRO) in Rome.

... painting is a fundamental commitment for me. It has to be personal, and above all sincere, because this is the only way (the painter) can clearly communicate what moves him - the most intimate longings, the visions of a limitless fantasy ... "

- Konstanty Gorbatowski, 1967

" ... malarstwo oznacza dla mnie generalną spowiedź. Musi być osobiste i co najważniejsze szczere, bo tylko w ten sposób można najpewniej wyrazić to, co się przeżywa, swoje najintymniejsze tęsknoty, widziadła z pogranicza fantazji ... "

- Konstanty Gorbatowski, 1967

He was married and had a son and a daughter. His daughter Alina Gorbatowska-Kulm (* 1952), whom he taught, also became a painter.
