The concert for human rights takes place at irregular intervals in the Stefaniensaal in Graz and is organized by the Musikverein für Steiermark . In 2017, it was held for the first time one day after Human Rights Day . The concert commemorates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and includes musical works with a message of peace.

Graz has been the first human rights city in Europe since 2001.

concept

Alfred Stingl , Former Mayor of Graz and Vice President of the Musikverein, coined the phrase: “No culture without human rights and no human rights without culture.” The Musikverein für Steiermark emphasizes: “Human rights should and should be a spiritual, cultural and political guide for design Another world of the future. ”This is the sense in which the pieces of music are selected, and the international line-up should also represent a sign of understanding and peaceful coexistence.

Dirk Kaftan , chief conductor of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra from 2013 to 2017, chose the Leningrad Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich for his concert for human rights in addition to Beethoven's Triple Concerto . He justified this as follows: "This symphony does not set the moral mallet in motion, but rather the belief in people."
