Koo Ja-cheol (born February 27, 1989 in Nonsan ) is a South Korean football player . He is under contract with the Al-Gharafa Sports Club .

Career

Koo was educated at Boin High School from 2004 to 2006 when he was a teenager . In 2007 he signed a contract with the K League club Jeju United and moved there.

In January 2010, Koo was first discussed with a European club: The English first division club Blackburn Rovers showed interest, but the change did not materialize. That year he was runner-up in the K-League with Jeju .

Shortly before the end of the transfer period on January 31, 2011, he signed a contract with German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg , for which he made his debut on matchday 2 against Bayern Munich when he came on for Hasan Salihamidžić in the 69th minute . From the 22nd matchday he was substituted on in every game; on matchday 29 he was in the starting lineup for the first time. The following day he made his first assist. After that, the relegation battle for Lower Saxony came to a head and it was only used in one of the last four games.

On January 31, 2012 he was finally loaned to FC Augsburg for the second half of the 2011/12 season. In his third Bundesliga game, on February 18, 2012, when he lost 4-1 away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (22nd matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal by equalizing the 1-1 draw in the 50th minute. With five goals in 15 back-round games, Koo was involved in the Augsburg relegation. Koo also played on loan for FC Augsburg in the 2012/13 season after his contract in Wolfsburg was extended by one year to June 30, 2015.

In January 2014, Koo switched to league competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05 , with whom he signed a contract until 2018. In his second appearance for FSV on February 1, 2014 (19th matchday), he scored his first goal for his new club with a 2-0 win against SC Freiburg . For Mainz 05 he played 39 Bundesliga games in which he scored a total of five goals.

On August 31, 2015, Koo returned to FC Augsburg. After five years and over 100 Bundesliga games, he joined the Al-Gharafa Sports Club in Qatar in early August 2019 .

National team

Koo made his senior national team debut in 2008 . He took part with her from February 17 to 23, 2008 in Chongqing in the East Asian Championship, which the team won.

In 2009 he was captain of the U-20 national team at the Junior World Cup in Egypt , which failed in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Ghana. In the technical report of the tournament, Koo is described as "a central defensive midfielder, good support, great commitment and will, effective position and passing play, good understanding of the game, extremely mobile".

In early 2011 he took part with the national team in the Asian Cup in Qatar , where he had five goals in six games in the semi-finals of South Korea. In 2012 he led the South Korean team to the Olympic soccer tournament as team captain and was used in all six games. In the game for third place, he and his team won the first Olympic medal for South Korean football players with the bronze medal, where he scored the first goal in the 2-0 win against Japan .

On May 9, 2014, Koo was appointed to the squad of the South Korean national soccer team for the 2014 World Cup by coach Hong Myung-bo . As team captain, he completed all three group games and scored one goal in the game against Algeria.
