The DS Koralai Pattu is a division (officially Divisional Secretary's Division ) in the Sri Lankan district of Batticaloa . Although the administrative seat is Valaichchenai , only the eastern part of this city belongs to the division.
geography
The division covers the area between the city of Valaichchenai in the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east. In north-south direction it extends from the southernmost place Kinnaiady to the northernmost place Nasivanthivu , which is the only place of the division on the side north of the lagoon of Valaichchenai . The city of Valaichchenai is divided into two parts due to segregation , of which the smaller part, where mostly Tamils live, belongs to the Koralai Pattu Division, while the predominantly Muslim part forms the majority of the Koralai Pattu Central Division. An important place in the division is Kalkudah on the coast , to which Pasikudah also belongs. This place has meanwhile developed touristically.
The area is very flat and the highest point is less than five meters high. The total coastline is 13.06 kilometers. The climate is dry and there is only sparse rain . The annual precipitation of 864 to 2897 millimeters is low compared to other regions of Sri Lanka. Much of the amount falls during the monsoon season . The hours of sunshine vary between 5.6 and 9 per day.
population
There is a slight surplus of women in the Koralai Pattu Division. As of 2012, the 11,169 men were compared to 12,207 women. With 11,403 people who have never been married, this population makes up around 50%. Of the 10,088 married people, only 8,460 were in an officially registered marriage. Most of the residents were between 15 and 19 years old. The number of children has been decreasing since the end of the 1990s. There are only 2,209 children between 0 and 4 years old, but 2,638 between 15 and 19 years old.
education
There were 7,099 students in 2010 who were taught by 288 teachers. 48% of them were male and 52% were female. According to the Divisional Secretariat, there is a shortage of teachers in the division's schools for English , science , maths and arts education .
Ethnic composition
Although the two towns of Oddamavadi and Valaichchenai, which are predominantly inhabited by moors, directly border the Koralai Pattu division, the division's population consists almost entirely of Sri Lankan Tamils . This shows a strong segregation in the region, since all settlements are very strictly separated according to ethnicity . Since some Sri Lankan Tamils also live in the city of Valaichchenai, the part west of the main street has been assigned to the Koralai Pattu Central Division, while the eastern part is part of the Koralai Pattu Division because the division is inhabited by Tamils. Due to this orientation to the ethnic composition in the division of the divisions, the proportion of Sri Lankan Tamils is 97.31%. Thus, the division is ethnically exceptionally homogeneous, although the ethnic composition of the Eastern Province is actually very heterogeneous. The Sinhalese make up the largest minority with 1.59%. Notable minorities are the Indian Tamils , the Burgher and the Moors.
Ethnicity | number | proportion of |
---|---|---|
Sri Lankan Tamils | 22,747 | 97.31% |
Sinhalese | 371 | 1.59% |

Malays | 0 | 0.00% |
Bharatha | 0 | 0.00% |
Other | 2 | 0.01% |
total | 23,376 | 100% |
religion
Based on the ethnic composition of the population, conclusions can be drawn about the distribution of religions . The largest group of the population, the Tamils , are Hindus . That is why the Hindus make up the majority of all religions. In addition, the proportion of Sinhalese with 1.59% matches the 1.24% Buddhists in the division and the proportion of Moors with 0.33% corresponds to the 0.34% Muslims in Koralai Pattu. The Burgher, the last significant minority, are predominantly Christian . Although only 0.36% of the population of Koralai Pattu belong to this ethnic group, 4,238 Christians live in the division. This corresponds to 18.13% of the total population. The reason for this is that many people of other ethnicities have also adopted the Christian faith through missionary work. The majority of Christians, however, are not Catholic, but mostly belong to an Anglican or Evangelical Church (e.g. Church of Ceylon or Assemblies of God ).
religion | number | proportion of |
