The Kornberg is a north-eastern mountain range of the Fichtelgebirge in Upper Franconia , Bavaria . In terms of nature , it belongs to the main unit of the Hohes Fichtelgebirge (394). Since September 2010 there has been a new design of the natural areas of northeast Bavaria, according to which the Waldstein (including the Kornberg) is an independent unit.

The highest point is the Great Kornberg (827 m). Starting in the west, there are still parts of the mountain range: The Birkenbühl (660 m), the Wellersberg (635 m) and the Neudesberg (664 m), then to the north the Petersberg (610 m), the Steinbühl (634 m), the Hauknock (691 m) and the Steinhöhe (720 m). In the east, the Rabenberg (719 m) together with the Pfaffenberg (710 m) form the transition to the Rehauer Forst and Elster Mountains .

While in the west the mountain range at Kirchenlamitz runs out gently and the stream Lamitz , the state road 2177 from Kirchenlamitz to Schwarzenbach an der Saale and the railway line Weiden – Oberkotzau from Niederlamitz to Schwarzenbach an der Saale leave the Fichtelgebirge to the north, in the east the one in the Rehau forest leaves springing Perlenbach together with the highway A 93 , the national road 2454 and the cheb-oberkotzau railway each of Selb according Rehau also Mountains north.

The Kornberg range also roughly forms the language border between East Franconian and Bavarian dialect , as the settlement developed along the rivers Saale , Weißer Main , Eger and Fichtelnaab , which originate in the Fichtelgebirge . The name Waldsteiner chain for the entire northern flank of the Fichtelgebirge has been forgotten and is no longer used.

Geologically , the mountain range consists essentially of granite . The story of its orogeny begins in the Precambrian about 750–800 million years ago - almost 20% of the earth's history , which only applies to a few of the rump mountains that still exist today .

Buildings

The former reconnaissance tower of the Bundeswehr and the tower of the Schönburgwarte, inaugurated in 1954, are located on the Großer Kornberg .
