The Kosiak or Geißberg ( Slovenian Kozjak or Ovčji vrh ) is a 2024 m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Karawanken in the state of Carinthia ( Austria ).
Location and surroundings
The Kosiak is about one kilometer north of the main ridge of the Karawanken, which also forms the Austrian- Slovenian border here. In its west and south lies the end of the Bärental valley , in the east that of the Bodental valley . The southern flank of Kosiak is characterized by steep meadow slopes, while the western and eastern flanks are rocky in character. Rubble heaps lie under the rock walls, the tree line is here at an altitude of about 1600 m . A pronounced ridge runs to the north and northwest, ending above the Kosiakkar and splitting here into a north and a north-west ridge . South of the mountain at the end of the Bärental lie the Matschacher Alm ( 1628 m ) and the Klagenfurter Hütte ( 1664 m ), an important starting point for climbing the Kosiak. To the east is the Ogrisalm at 1569 m .
Paths to the summit
The normal route to the summit is a marked circular hiking trail, the Friedrich-Zopp-Steig from the Klagenfurter Hütte. It leads over the southwest flank and the southeast side. Both variants take about an hour to complete, mostly going up on the west side and descending on the east side.
On the north and north-east side there are several climbs in the II. To III. Difficulty level from the Ogrisalm. The ascent over the northwest ridge shows the II., The III. Difficulty on.
In winter the Kosiak is a popular ski tour , especially the descent over the southwest flank is appreciated by winter sports enthusiasts.
