Kotányi is a leading and traditional Austrian spice trader based in Wolkersdorf in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria.

In Austria, where Kotányi claims to have an 80% market share, only 30% of sales are generated, while 70% are achieved in exports to Eastern and Central European countries. In Russia alone, the share is 20% of sales with a market share of 13 to 14%.

The group of companies consists of six subsidiaries in Eastern Europe. The product range includes around 4,500 different items.

history

The company was founded in 1881 by János Kotányi, who immigrated to Vienna from Szeged in Hungary. Kotányi was married to Sophie Sonnenfeld. He originally processed Hungarian paprika into paprika powder in his hometown. In Vienna-Döbling he founded a trading company and a forwarding company, where he also traded in wine vinegar , cognac and slivovitz . In 1887, the company János Kotányi was registered in Vienna in the commercial register after János Kotányi had already founded the company Kotányi & Oberländer with a partner a year earlier , but was soon liquidated again. He became known especially for his paprika mixes and in 1912 he became a purveyor to the royal court .

In the 1920s he expanded the range of paprika production to include other spices and set up additional branches in Budapest , Berlin , Munich , Boston and New York . The company name has been expanded to include the addition of the First Austrian Paprika Mill . In 1925 the son Hans Kotányi (* 1888), the younger brother of Marianne Kotányi, took over the company after attending a commercial college . None of the three younger sisters joined the company. János Kotányi died in 1928.

The company itself was one of the first in Austria to be Aryanized in 1938 . Hans Kotányi sold to Georg Kohl on March 16, 1938 and was arrested an hour later. He was deported in one of the first transports, the so-called Prominententransport , to the Dachau concentration camp , where he committed suicide on April 28, 1938. The family emigrated to England. The company initially operated with the addition of owner Georg Kohl, later directly under this name.

After the ariseur Georg Kohl was no longer in Vienna from 1945, the former authorized signatory Theodor Rabner led the company. Although the widow of Hans Kotányi Charlotte and her son Friedrich Walter did not return from England until 1954 and 1955, the company was restituted as early as 1948 and from then on it operated again as the first Austrian paprika mill Johann Kotányi with Charlotte, Friedrich Walter and his sister in the limited partnership .

In addition to constant production improvements, there has also been significant progress in packaging. In 1978 a fully automatic film packaging machine was put into operation.

After the death of Friedrich Kotányi in 1981, the nephew Erwin Kotányi (* 1957) took over the management of the company. In the same year the company received the state award and has since been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions.

In 1989 the company took over the Mickstötter company (Linz, Vienna) and relocated its headquarters from Vienna to Wolkersdorf in the northern industrial center. A subsidiary was also established in Hungary. In 1994 the spice brand Seybold from Tyrol was taken over.

In 1997, Hannes Androsch wanted to take over the 25% stake that Salinen Austria had acquired in 1989, but the owner family rejected this. In 2009 the family bought back all of the salt works, so that the company is completely family-owned.

In the 1990s and 2000s, branches were established in other Eastern and Central European countries and other trademarks were taken over. The export share is 60%. In Austria itself, the company has a market share of 80%. By its own account, Kotányi is at least number two in the industry in 20 countries .

As of 2017, 10,000 tons of spices are being sold annually. In terms of quantity, pepper leads with 2500 t, followed by paprika. Roasted chicken salt is the most important blend of spices.

Packaging forms are:

  • Letters - flat bags made of composite film (polyethylene, aluminum and paper), welded all around. This accounts for the largest share of sales.
  • Collapsible bags - composite film made of polyethylene and aluminum
  • Glasses
  • PET jars with screw caps
  • Disposable glass mills
  • Tins, fitted with a closure flap - especially for grilling

The Mickstötter brand is still used today for a product line.
