The St. Elisabethen Hospital in Ravensburg is a hospital of the central supply in Ravensburg and part of Oberschwabenklinik . The clinic with 520 patient beds is a supra-regional and certified stroke center as well as a certified breast , vascular and intestinal center . A perinatal focus is the St. Nikolaus Children's Hospital , which is attached to the clinic. In addition, the Elisabethenkrankenhaus is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Ulm .

Origin of name

The namesake of the clinic is Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207–1231).

history

The forerunner of the hospital was the St. Josef Hospital in Ravensburger Roßbachstrasse from 1885. In 1897, planning began for a new hospital at the current location. On July 1, 1901, the St. Elisabeth Hospital, run by the Franciscans von Reute , had 60 beds and opened. In 1904 the hospital got an electrically operated lighting and elevator system, in 1905 an infection department and disinfection system. During the First World War , the hospital was a reserve hospital, but it was also responsible for the civilian population.

In 1924 a nursing school was founded and the number of beds increased to 170. In 1932 the east wing was added, increasing the number of beds to 300. In the Second World War the St. Elisabeth was again a military hospital , during this time the civilian population was again cared for in St. Josef. Between 1945 and 1954 the house was confiscated by the French occupying forces . The St. Nikolaus Children's Hospital was relocated from Ravensburger Kapuzinerstraße in 1958. In the 1960s there were numerous expansions to the hospital, including a staff dormitory in 1964 and a treatment building and a ward in 1969.

In 1977 the hospital became an academic teaching hospital at Ulm University. In 1981, the hospital became a house of the central supply expanded. In 1983 the first oncological focus of the state of Baden-Württemberg was established at the clinic . In 1984 another bed building was moved into and with it an intensive care unit with 24 beds . With the St. Nikolaus, a total of 656 beds were now available. Further expansion measures took place between 1986 and 1995. On January 1st 1997 the Oberschwabenklinik ( gGmbH ) was founded and the St. Elisabeth became part of the company.

Certifications were issued in 2000 for the stroke focus, 2004 for the breast center, 2005 for the vascular center and 2009 for the intestinal center. In 2005 the church withdrew as the sponsor of the Oberschwabenklinik-Gesellschaft, after which only the city and district of Ravensburg held shares. Major renovation and new building measures have been taking place at the clinic since 2009, which are planned to last until 2017. The costs for this should amount to 263 million euros. This makes the new building of the clinic the most expensive construction project in the history of the district. The first phase of construction was completed in 2013. On January 21, 2013, the new 360-bed ward building was officially inaugurated with Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Katrin Altpeter . The ward block has ten wards on five floors and a hospital chapel. The construction work to date has cost 131 million euros, of which the district contributed 115 million euros, the state of Baden-Württemberg 51 million euros and Oberschwabenklinik gGmbh 16 million euros. An open house was held on February 24, 2013 and was attended by approximately 15,000 people.
