Window Descent from the Cross

The stained glass window Descent from the Cross in the Notre-Dame-en-Vaux church in Châlons-en-Champagne , a French city in the Grand Est region , was created in 1526. The Renaissance window has been classified as a monument historique since 1840 .

history

Window No. 19 (based on the scheme of Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi ) was donated by Jean Robert and his wife Jeanne, who owned the L'Écu de France hostel on rue Léon-Bourgeois (formerly rue Saint-Jacques). The grave slab of Jean Robert († December 21, 1527) is on the floor below this window, which is the work of an unknown master.

In addition to the Descent from the Cross (top center) by Joseph of Arimathäa and Nicodemus , the following scenes are shown:

  • the high priest returns to Jerusalem (top, far left)
  • the soul of the repentant thief is taken by an angel (to the left of the descent from the cross, to the right of Jesus)
  • the soul of the evil thief is taken by the devil (to the right of the descent from the cross, to the left of Jesus)
  • Lamentation of Christ (bottom center)
  • In the lower part of the window, the kneeling founder with St. John the Baptist can be seen on the left and the kneeling founder with St. John (their namesake) on the right.

In the center of the tracery , Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene is depicted surrounded by angels. Below are the heads of Pontius Pilate , Kajaphas , Hannas and Herod .
