The first mention of a settlement on the site of today's Krośniewice comes from 1387, when the place already had a parish church. The exact assignment of town charter to the site is not known, but it is assumed that it was before 1442.

In 1567 a fire destroyed almost the entire city. During the Second Partition of Poland , the place came under Prussian rule. With the formation of the Duchy of Warsaw , Krośniewice became part of the same in 1807 and part of Congress Poland in 1815 . In 1870 the place lost its town charter. At the end of the First World War , the place became part of Poland again and received its town charter back in 1926.

During an administrative reform, the city became part of the Płock Voivodeship in 1975 , and when it was reformed again in 1999 it became part of the Łódź Voivodeship.
