Krunoslav Cigoj

Krunoslav Cigoj (born March 30, 1949 in Zagreb , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ; † August 27, 2015 Zagreb, Croatia ) was a Yugoslav opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Cigoj studied singing, first privately with Miroslav Fritz Tunzer in Zagreb, and later at the Vienna Conservatory . He made his debut at the Split Opera House in 1967 with the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale . He made his international debut in 1968 at the Vienna Volksoper , where he was permanently engaged for the 1968/69 season. He sang there a. a. the Nemorino in the opera The Love Potion . In 1969 he became a permanent member of the Zagreb National Opera . Since 1973 he has appeared there regularly as a guest. In addition to Zagreb, Cigoj sang in Sarajevo , Osijek and Maribor .

Cigoj sang there mainly parts from the lyric tenor subject ; Occasionally he took on a few dramatic tenor roles and parts from the field of the tenoral intermediate subject. His repertoire included a. Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville , Alfredo in La Traviata , Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera , Gabriele Adorno in Simone Boccanegra , Rodolfo in La Bohème , Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and the title role in Hoffmann's stories . He also sang the title role in the opera Nerone by Arrigo Boito . With this role he made his New York debut in 1982 in a concert performance with the Opera Orchestra of New York under the musical direction of Eve Queler ; he designed the "demanding role of Nero with a powerful, fluid voice". Cigoj had a "very lyrical, crystalline and expressive voice", he was known for his "spirited interpretation".

He also took on roles in the field of operetta , sang Italian canzones and folk songs. He also performed at the Krapina Music Festival (Festival kajkavskih popevki Krapina).

In 1984 Cigoj was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma , which eventually led to the end of his singing career. In 1985 he performed the title role in Faust at the Connecticut Grand Opera in Stamford . In March 1988 he sang, belonging to the “standing tenor” type, with “proper, somewhat reduced vocal means”, at the Nabucco guest performance of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb in Ludwigshafen, Ismaele.

After the end of his singing career he worked as an opera director. After finishing his singing career, he also worked as a professional diplomat in the field of cultural diplomacy. He was a consultant for culture and education in the Croatian embassy in Sarajevo.

He was a member of the Croatian Music Society (Hrvatsko društvo glazbenih umjetnika). In 1985 he was awarded the “ Milka Trnina ” music prize awarded by the Croatian Association of Music Artists.

Recordings with Cigoj were released by the brands Jugoton and Metronome, and others. a. 1970 a record with well-known tenor arias entitled "Kruno Cigoj - The world's youngest opera tenor", on which Cigoj was accompanied by the Hamburg State Philharmonic under the direction of Nello Santi . In addition, a single was released with the songs “Your is my whole heart” and “From apple blossoms a wreath” from the operetta The Land of Smiles .

Cigoj died on August 27, 2015 at the age of 66 after a long illness in his home in Zagreb.
