Krzysztof Olaf Charamsa

biography

Charamsa studied from 1991 to 1997 theology and philosophy at the seminary in Polish Pelplin and at the same time from 1993 to 1997 at the Faculty of Theology in Swiss Lugano . He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1997. He then studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he defended his doctorate in 2002 . Since 2009 he has taught at the same university as a lecturer and since 2004 at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome. In 2011 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the International Theological Commission of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican . On July 6, 2008, he received the papal title of chaplain of His Holiness , addressed as Monsignor .

Coming out 2015

On October 2, 2015 , Charamsa came out as homosexual ; he lives with his partner, the Catalan Eduard Planas, in Barcelona . He said that the date of his outing shortly before the start of a family synod in the Vatican was deliberately chosen to publish a list of ten demands. He appealed to the Synod to put an end to its “paranoid behavior” towards sexual minorities. It is “inhuman” to demand “total abstinence” and a “life without love” from homosexuals. He knows that the clergy are "predominantly homosexual". The fact that homophobia is so pronounced in the church at the same time , he explained with the lack of acceptance of one's own sexual orientation. After coming out, Charamsa announced a book about his experiences in the Roman Curia .

On October 3rd, the Vatican's spokesman, Federico Lombardi , announced that Charamsa could no longer work for the Vatican and the university. Although he loses his job, Charamsa remains a priest. Lombardi, however, indicated that Charamsa's supervisor could take further action. The Bishop of Pelplin, Ryszard Kasyna , warned Charamsa and asked him to return "to the office of Christ". Charamsa's statements contradict the gospel and the teaching of the Catholic Church. On October 17, 2015, he was finally suspended as a priest by Kasyna after no atonement had been made, which at the same time prohibited him from wearing the clothes customary for Roman Catholic priests.

Charamsa received support from former Irish President Mary McAleese , who complained that the prevailing doctrine of the Church was "inherently wrong" and that many priests with a tendency to homosexuality pretended to be "gay haters" in order to score points with heterosexual confreres. For this she was celebrated with a standing ovation by participants at a meeting of the Global Network of Rainbow Catholics .
