The Kulturhaus Plessa is a listed event building in the southern Brandenburg municipality of Plessa in the Elbe-Elster district . It is located in the center of the town directly on federal highway 169 .

Building description and equipment

The Kulturhaus is a two-storey event building with a gable roof and made of concrete, which is largely plastered from the time of construction. On its northern facade there are murals with motifs of agriculture and industry in sgraffito technique . At the entrance portal, also on the north side, there is a risalit with emblems of mining, electricity and agriculture.

Great Hall
Small Hall

The heart of the building is the so-called Great Hall on the upper floor. It has a floor area of around 450 m². This can seat around 450 guests in row seating. In front of it is a 100 m² hall-like foyer with a cloakroom and bar. This hall also has a 184 m² stage to which several artists' cloakrooms are connected.

In addition, there are other rooms in the house that can be used for events. The 142 m² large small hall in the basement , which has a fixed podium instead of a stage, in conjunction with an adjoining seminar room (52 m²) offers up to 250 standing places or 140 seats in rows. It is separated from the foyer, which is also 100 m² in size, by a 29 m² corridor.

The former restaurant is now a common room used. The approximately 80 m² room can accommodate up to 60 guests in row seating.

Carnival in the Plessa cultural center

The Plessaer Kulturhaus was built between 1955 and 1960 by the Plessa lignite works in the town center, which was badly affected by the effects of the Second World War, in the immediate vicinity of the village church. The architect of the building, which is characterized by the baroque-classical style, was Erich Graf. The VEB project planning and construction office "Coal" in Berlin-Weißensee took over the implementation planning in 1956 .

The inauguration of the house of culture took place with a festival weekend, with the miners' theater from Senftenberg opening on Friday, July 1, 1960 . Gerhard Müller became the first director of the cultural center. Shortly after the facility opened, it received the status of a district culture house. The house was used for all kinds of events. In addition to political events, concerts and theater performances were also held here. It could also be used as a cinema. There was a restaurant on the lower floor. A library, some circle rooms and two official apartments were also integrated. Local businesses used the building for celebrations, clubs, for example, for meetings. Above all, the Plessa carnival events became very well known in the region.

In the 1960s, Müller followed the Würdenhainer Walter Kotte, who was in charge of the house until 1988 and when the Plessaer Carnelvalsverein (PCC) was founded in 1980, which he actively supported in the following years, in which, among other things, money flowed to the association via the Kulturhaus and among other things he made contact with the Chemnitz costume rental company. In 1985 the cultural center was placed under a preservation order. After Kotte went into retirement, Andreas Görschner from Plessa managed the facility until its later liquidation in the summer of 1994. His predecessor Kotte later became an honorary member of the Plessa Carnival Association due to his former commitment.

The fall of the local lignite industry came with the fall of the 1990s and the Bad Liebenwerda district was merged into the Elbe-Elster district as part of the district reform in Brandenburg in December 1993 . This also meant that the institution's largest donors fell away. In 1993, the community of Plessa took over the sponsorship of the cultural center and has had to fight to keep it since then.

Fire protection deficiencies finally led in 2009 to the fact that the large hall was temporarily closed for larger events by the district. As a result, the traditional carnival events had to take place for two years in a specially built emergency tent. Ultimately, there was meanwhile a serious debate about tearing down the house and building a supermarket on the site that would then become free.

The community and residents of the village, especially the members of the cultural association and the carnival association, have been working on the structural deficiencies step by step since the closure and modernizing the house. Since then, countless hours of volunteer work have been invested in the building. With a special permit under increased conditions, the carnival events could again take place in the Kulturhaus in November 2010. At the end of 2012, however, the total costs of the renovation measures were still estimated at 4.7 million euros, whereby the community of around 2800 inhabitants - in which there is another major project with the Plessa power plant, which was shut down in 1992 - is not in a position under the budget conditions of 2012 saw to raise the necessary own share for EU funding at that time.

With the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the Elbe-Elster district , Prof. Ludwig Güttler was able to symbolically hand over a three-storey foyer window consisting of 25 individual segments for the house at his third supporter concert in December 2013 .

Despite the backlog of renovations on the building, the Kulturhaus is enjoying great popularity in the region and beyond thanks to a large number of events for all generations and interests. For the creative market, which was organized by the Plessa eV cultural association for the sixth time in 2014, the space currently available in the Kulturhaus is no longer sufficient for all interested parties. An over 30s party has been established in the Kulturhaus since 2013, which also attracts guests from cities such as Dresden and Leipzig due to its special ambience and is now the best-attended event of its kind in the region.

In addition to the attractiveness for visitors, the interest of supra-regional organizers and institutions in the region in the use of the cultural center has been increasing steadily since 2011. The Elsterschloss-Gymnasium Elsterwerda organizes the "Pennefasching" together with the Plessa Carnival Club, in which around 500 pupils and carnivalists populate the house, separated into two age groups. In 2014, the schools from Plessa and Hohenleipisch jointly organized a ceremony for the start of school in the Kulturhaus. In 2014, the youth groups from the Plessa Office, the City of Elsterwerda, the Schradenland Office and the Röderland municipality jointly presented the results of their state youth projects to parents, project participants and interested guests.

In 2015 Frank Schöbel and Chris Doerk will give one of their farewell concerts in the Kulturhaus Plessa.

Benefit campaigns

Voluntary work

Since the municipality of Plessa, as the institution responsible for the facility, is not in a position to maintain the building on its own, ongoing support from outside is necessary. One of the key points for maintaining the house of culture is therefore numerous voluntary work assignments by local associations. But also the surrounding cities and municipalities as well as the district and the state parliament itself were brought on board. On December 29, 2008, the Plessa cultural association was founded, which has included the maintenance of the cultural center in its program.

In addition, benefit events and campaigns take place again and again in order to raise the necessary financial resources that are necessary for the maintenance and operation of the facility. Prominent supporters include the trumpeter Ludwig Güttler , who is known for his services to the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche , the director Andreas Dresen and the actor and musician Axel Prahl , who can be seen regularly on TV as Tatort commissioner Frank Thiel .

Most recently, on August 31, 2014, as part of the Grundton D concert series by Deutschlandradio and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, a special concert by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Brass took place in the Kulturhaus . As part of the event, which was attended by more than 400 guests, donations of 20,000 euros were collected, which are to be used for the renewal of the entrance portal. On January 12, 2015, the recording of the concert will be broadcast nationwide on Deutschlandradio.

Another charity campaign in favor of the Kulturhaus is the Halloween spectacle held on the grounds of the former Impulsa training workshop on the outskirts of the village.

One ongoing donation campaign is chair sponsorship . During this campaign, the names of the donors, engraved on brass plaques, are placed on the historic chairs in the Great Hall . These donors also receive an ambassador's certificate .
